2 month old E-Trac acting up?

Just yesterday and today my machine seems to be acting up. When I first turn it on and do the noise cancel thing it works fine. Then after a few minutes it starts giving false signals. When I go back to these signals they are gone. If I turn the machine off and on again it works fine again for a few minutes then I start getting the false signals again.
Some of the settings are:
deep off
fast on
ground difficult
trash density high
volume gain 28
tone id multi
threshold pitch 28
I have been hunting without headphones so I have the threshold level and the volume limit turned up enough to overcome backround noise.
A friend of mine, who also has an E-Trac, says that having the threshold level as high as I do will cause it to give false signals. He suggested using
my headphones and turning down the threshold level and the volume limit. I did that and the false signals went away. My question is why would having the threshold level and volume limit set high cause the machine to give false signals?
Am a newbie with the E-Trac so any comments are welcomed.

Thanks for reading.
Dan.

Dan----You always want to use a good quality of headphones (especially with the Etrac) to get those deep, tough targets that you obviously bought the Etrac for in the first place.----The Sunray Pro Golds are a wonderful "marriage" for the Explorers/Etracs (for a bunch of reasons) & I can't recommend them enough!-----As far as the settings you mentioned--I run my Etrac fairly similar to your settings you mentioned & have never had the problem you described.-----In fact, I run my Etrac "hotter" than you do with excellent results (I have my gain & threshold pitch maxed at 30).------Try turning fast "off"---also, if you can, try these same settings (you use) with another Etrac & see how it acts.----It's possible that there is an issue with your machine.-----Check your coil & coil cable out thoroughly to make sure it isn't the "culprit".--------Del

hi a friend had the same problem after us trying every function we looked at the conection screw into the box it was not tightened enough, solved the problem.

Very good point chalky---sometimes it can be something as simple as that.-----Another thought--check your batteries/battery contacts.----One well known detector manufacturer said they have MANY detectors sent in for repair when it is nothing more than a simple battery issue.------If you do all these things and it still isn't right--it's "send in time".---Turn around time on repair hasn't been all that great lately with Minelab but hopefully it's getting better (the repair is good, it's just that it takes quite a while to get the detector back).----------Del

Thanks, good points all. I did check the connection from the coil to the control box and it was screwed in tightly. I went hunting today for a couple of hours using the headphones only. Had no problems. BTW the only reason I went without headphones before was because I was in a park that only had clad coins and there was no one else around to disturb.
Will see what happens in the next few days.

Thanks, Dan.

What connection screw? Where is that located? Thanks!!

The coil lead plug screws into the front of control housing and is out of site inside upper rod so often out of mind and can work loose over time and cause trouble,Ray.

Make sure you take the cover off the coil and clean it.

Thanks!

this happened to me once and i realized that my sensitivity had somehow switched to manual, at about 28 or so. when i switched back to auto it was fine, and it ran at about 24 or so. (from what i can remember) that would be the first thing i would check. i love the auto sensitivity. it adjusts so quickly.
