2 firsts for January

G'day all,

I had a good month with just over $500 in coin but 2 unusual finds were the highlight.

Having found quite a few old pre decimal coins, most multple times, I had never found a silver Florin.
Australia converted from the British pounds / pence system to decimal system (100x 1c to the dollar) in 1966.
I love finding these wonderful, old nostalgic coins, reminders of my early childhood.
The Florin was worth one tenth of a pound... a lot of money back then.
Yesterday, hunting is a cty park with the standard coil and using pattern 2, I un-earthed just over $20 modern and 3 pre decimal coins..2 half pennys and a penny - or so i thought.
It was very hard to tell as they were very dirty from decades in the ground.
I needed to wash them and put on my reading glasses to see the dates etc.
The penny was a silver florin ( approx. the same size coins )
Cool...Florin achieved , I'm happy now
...having said that all Aussie m.d. aspire to find a rare gold sovereign (worth $330 todays value )-maybe one day.

Natural Gold...I was using my Xt70 (and my brand new Gray Ghost originals) and on my 2nd trip to one of the smallish 1850's goldfields of my state.
I went with a friend using his Minelab 4500, an reasonably experienced gold propector.
We both picked up small lead shotgun pellets, rusty iron nails from the old timers work boots etc.
As usual, my Xterra was noisy as hell due to the heavy mineralisation.
Sometimes it has been so mineralised that even my Garrett Pro pointer will sound off at the mineralised soil or ironstone.
A couple of ordinary looking rocks particularly caught my attention, my Xt70 screamed at them, we both thought - just real hot hotrocks.
But, stubborn as I am, I stowed them in my belt pack and lugged them back to car and once home deposited them into my shed.
There they sat forgotten about for 6 months, until 2 days ago when I crushed them with a 5 pound hammer and panned the crushed ore.
Well, blow me down, staring up from my gold pan was my first little nugget.
I swore loudly in disbelief and my wife came rushing into the garden to see what the fuss was about.
Very happy, to pick up my first piece, albeit fairly small.

happy detecting to everyone.

Good for you, Hope there is more coming

I'd say you had a pretty good month. You got me thing on those hot rock I brought home sitting on my front porch...

Nice one Terra.. now.. if you can convince the masses that you can see an image of the Virgin Mary in that piece of gold, you could possibly retire from retirement.

Good one Terra. I once found a hot rock up near Bathurst and dutifully chucked it away down the hill out of sight. The next day I was detecting further down the hill and of course found the same hot rock, but this time when I picked it up, it felt a lot heavier and the detector was making a weird overload sort of signal, so I placed this rusty looking rock on a larger flat rock and started belting it with the pick to crack it open.

It was a really tough rock but when the pick finally split it in two I had two halves of a silvery, crystalline metallic sort of material.

The two halves ended up in my finds bag and not long after that trip I read an article on meteorites and the description sounded very much like the mystery hot rock. I took it along to the local museum where the guy confirmed that I had indeed two halves of what was most likely a meteorite all the way from Mars.

You just never know what you might dig up next in this game, and like you I am hopefull it might be a gold sovereign.

Good luck, Loz
