G'day all,
I had a good month with just over $500 in coin but 2 unusual finds were the highlight.
Having found quite a few old pre decimal coins, most multple times, I had never found a silver Florin.
Australia converted from the British pounds / pence system to decimal system (100x 1c to the dollar) in 1966.
I love finding these wonderful, old nostalgic coins, reminders of my early childhood.
The Florin was worth one tenth of a pound... a lot of money back then.
Yesterday, hunting is a cty park with the standard coil and using pattern 2, I un-earthed just over $20 modern and 3 pre decimal coins..2 half pennys and a penny - or so i thought.
It was very hard to tell as they were very dirty from decades in the ground.
I needed to wash them and put on my reading glasses to see the dates etc.
The penny was a silver florin ( approx. the same size coins )
Cool...Florin achieved , I'm happy now
...having said that all Aussie m.d. aspire to find a rare gold sovereign (worth $330 todays value )-maybe one day.
Natural Gold...I was using my Xt70 (and my brand new Gray Ghost originals) and on my 2nd trip to one of the smallish 1850's goldfields of my state.
I went with a friend using his Minelab 4500, an reasonably experienced gold propector.
We both picked up small lead shotgun pellets, rusty iron nails from the old timers work boots etc.
As usual, my Xterra was noisy as hell due to the heavy mineralisation.
Sometimes it has been so mineralised that even my Garrett Pro pointer will sound off at the mineralised soil or ironstone.
A couple of ordinary looking rocks particularly caught my attention, my Xt70 screamed at them, we both thought - just real hot hotrocks.
But, stubborn as I am, I stowed them in my belt pack and lugged them back to car and once home deposited them into my shed.
There they sat forgotten about for 6 months, until 2 days ago when I crushed them with a 5 pound hammer and panned the crushed ore.
Well, blow me down, staring up from my gold pan was my first little nugget.
I swore loudly in disbelief and my wife came rushing into the garden to see what the fuss was about.
Very happy, to pick up my first piece, albeit fairly small.
happy detecting to everyone.
