2 First this weekend

I`ve put some hours on the GTI 2000 that I bought last week. Friday left work early to get a few hrs before dark. I hit my first foreign silver, a 1947 quarter from the Dominican Republic. Today we put in a full day in a couple of old fields that produced my first Large cent! (1837) The other PC is a WW I Victory medal that was giving to those who served in the first world war. I found that at my usual spot close to home last weekend. This spot was a neighborhood which is now a field, it dates to the 40`s and was Military back then. I`m still not impressed with the depth but it is probably the trashy areas masking some of the deeper targets. These 3 pcs were all less than 3 In. deep!

There may not be much there any deeper. One of the myths of detecting is that everything old is buried halfway to China. It ain't so. I've found coins from the 1700's at two inches and clad at 9-10 inches in the same area. UNless coins are purposely buried, covered by landfill, or buried by nature, they don't sink all that much. The type of soil has a lot to do with their rate of descent or if they are in an area with a lot of trees shedding leaves every year.

Just because you ain't finding deep coins doesn't mean your detector is faulty. Did you do an air test as I mentioned?

Yea Willy air test was pretty good, around 8" on a quarter. I think the Explore II seams to be able to pull some deep targets out in trashy areas, that I can`t get nothing on, is the real issue for me not the detector. But then again it coast 3 times as much as I paid for the GTI. I havn`t dug a coin from 6" yet but I`m not done yet either. I have made some cool finds with it in the first 3 or 4 trips, so I plan to use it with my Sovereign XS this winter. I`ll see what happens. I did turn my sen. back to between 6 and 8 and that helped the "touchyness" alot Thanks. As for deep coins, The only old coins I have found have been where the soil was moved around during demolition of the houses. I have not pulled a wheatie from a undesturbed area yet, But have found 12 in 2 trips. I`m sure they are there but so is a lot of trash.
I have the 9.5 coil what do you think about other coils such as the 12" coil on depth, non imaging, or even the smaller coil for more depth in trashy areas. Thanks again for the help!
