2 FILTER DETECTOR ADVISE

bustercrab

New member
I have a friend who only hunts sites that are full of litter.Any idea on a machine best suited for this and what type of coil to use.

Hay Buster Crab,

You ain't gonna believe it. Tesoro Compadre.

It's speed and separation abilities are second to none, especially at its price of $151
at some online dealers! They also have surprising depth with the 5.75 coil which is
hard wired and can not be changed.

Everyone makes excuses not to buy this machine. Doesn't have all metal. Doesn't
have pin point. Can't change coils. And so on.

The analog disc and expressive responses of this machine are awesome.

To me it's a no-brainer.

HH,

don't forget the silver u-max!..about the same!..get 'em used for 200.00

Thanks to previous posts on the Compadre, and especially the awesome posts Tabdog put out, I couldn't help but to add the Compadre to the already hand full of machines I already had. So the breaking point was Tabdog made me do it - and I have no regrets
That simple little affordable Compadre with the 5.75 coil can sure pull more than it's weight. I find it works very well in trashy areas.
My excuse at first was they forgot the other knobs and switches, so I thought it couldn't do much. Tabdog proved me wrong and I'm glad he did.
Alright, I currently have eight machines, and the Compadre is not one collecting dust.
I thought the Silver uMax was a fun factor machine, well it's is, but the Compadre for what it is impressed me. Now if i could only do as well as Tabdog :punch:

I love my Silver. All though it's a Silver Sabre uMax version, I think the performance is the same

in the disc mode, but the SS uMax version has a threshold based all metal pin point mode.

The silver is great at cherry picking trashy sites. The Compadre is perpared for an all out assalt.

That is why I think these two MD's go togather. Offering a wider range of capabilities.

Now, if I can just figure out how to get my hands on a Tejon, I will be in realms of other capabilities.

HH,

Tab, Would you rate your machines?
Only by order in which they are grabbed???

Thanks!

right on man!..i bought a silver for my daughter, and she had never used a metal detector before,so what does she do the first time out?..she finds a 1902
barber dime at a very trashy park!..she got a nice hit from all angles, then called me over with the xl-pro,and the meter pegged dime..82!..@ 6 "...nice clean hit!
a great trash machine indeed!

That's not an easy answer for me because it would depend on both the type of hunting and the area. Then as a new machine is added, I tend to spend some time with that machine, and the time spent is somewhat determined if I like it or not after the first few hunts. Another factor is time, if I go for a short hunt then a grab and go beep and dig gets me started and going. Longer hunts like relic (I usually start with the Tejon) I get started and make fine adjustment more so at the beginning till I get it set for conditions and the types of finds.
So there are several variable involved and overall, I spend more time on general local hunts since it's close, convenient, and less time restricted. Relics hunts are more of a drive and takes more planning and time.
Then there is the unknown twilight zone variable - my mood.
Another variable is when my son or a newbie, or friend tags along who don't have a machine. I always let them take first choice so I'm left with one or two choices depending how many machines I take.
Enough boring babble yap at the lips (keyboard) - so I'll list and maybe add a comment or two.

Tesoro Compadre (New and works better than expected. Keeps impressing me in the trashy areas and is fun to use.)
Tesoro Silver uMax (Bought before the Compadre. My Fun Factor machine. Just like it but still getting used to it. Will pair up nice with the Compadre).
Tesoro Tejon (My first grab for relic. Deep and powerful. Doesn't wear me out swinging, does sometimes digging. Have used it effectively coin hunting too).
Tesoro Cibola (My first Cibola. Just used it some the other day, keep grabbing here and there. Already like an old friend that served well. Fast for local coin hunts)
Tesoro Cortes (I like the audio and smoothness. Bought because the sum mode caught my interest but I ended up hunting by audio, like my other Tesoro's)
Minelab Explorer-2 (Slow but sucks silver deep. Wears me out. It's my oldest now (sold everything else) so like an old friend I take once in awhile).
Fisher F-75 (Fairly new, not used to it yet. It is deep, fast and able to swing all day. I need to work with the audio as I'm not used to it - yet. Need more time)
Garrett ACE 250 (Actually bought for the wife. She didn't use it. Now a loaner mainly as It's a newbie most picked machine. I use once in awhile for ops check)

They order they are listed is because of particular reasons, like the Compadre being the newest machine, to the ACE 250 was not intended for myself. As I learn here and there and the spring weather breaks for relic, the order may be changed in a month or so. Then there are other factors such as the F-75 - need to work it more. Large coil works good. Small coil went bad and is being replaced.
Also, whenever I get a new coil, I tend to spend some dedicated time using it at first with which ever machine(s) it goes on.
In the last year - spent more time with Tesoro. Like the audio, response speed and weight. Guess that's why there five now.
Time before - used a Whites for many years and also did nugget shooting with a hand full of gold machines. Went through a number of other machines also.
What happened - I went through a phase where i wanted to replace all my older machines with the latest technology. There are a few machines now I wish I would have kept. It's too late now, like loosing a few old friends.
Currently - Still trying to figure what machines I want to keep, what to get rid of, and what I might want to add. Also not sure if I want to get back into the occasional gold nugget hunting. Gold nugget hunting took allot of patience, but I'm missing the hunt every time we get a good winter wash.
Future - I'm still lingering in the twilight zone

What type of "litter" is at this site and how deep do the desired targets generally run? It can be hard for any machine to see thru surface trash to the older deeper stuff. Coil size and type comes in to play big time.

Thanks Tab-nabit!

It IS interesting to see the $ mark in the progression!
...and you caught me, as I did not factor the specific uses of various machines when I asked...

My Little Yeller Feller was bought under exactly same circumstances, and gets the same use as yours!
I should have bought my wife a Cortes and a Compadre for myself!
(Yah, she'd believe that!):)

More than anything, for improvement, I've got to start thinking outside the box and find different places to hunt.
If I don't, it seems I'll be forever stuck as a turf surfer!

HH

hi tom!
the "litter" was mostly pull tabs, and aluminum foil, along with some iron as well!..she had on the standard 8" coil, and believe it there was some foil in the hole along with the dime!..the silver was set beyond pull tab discrimination!..somehow the silver got around the "crap" and saw that dime!..to be perfectly honest my xl-pro did get a nice hit from the dime too, however from certain sweep angles i got a broken hit or two, however the meter momentarily went to foil, then back to dime, however the signal WAS clean enough to dig the signal!..what was amazing about this was the fact the "silver" gave no "chatter" whatsoever due in part because the discriminator was set so high AND, the signal WAS completly clean from all sweep angles!..i am a white's man,but i gotta tell ya,kudos to that little silver and the 120 discriminating circuit, that i believe is the same one that is in the compadre!..it is a "crackerjack" little detector!

i said the silver has the 120 circuit in it,however i am not sure but i think the compadre has the '140' discriminator! circuit!. .either way,"both" detectors are great in the trash!

(h.h!)
j.t.

that's right!..i got it wrong!..you are correct the compadre has the ed-180 discriminator!..i believe it is the silver that has the ed-120!
