Years ago, i believe that one company either made or was discussing the possibility of making a detector that was switchable between a 2 or 4 filter system. Anyone else recall this?

Only one i recall is the mark 1 tek it automaticly switches from one to two filters depending on the ground, also compass had the varifilter out on the coinscanners series.

Thanks, it might have been the Mark 1. I did not know that the DFX had that capability. Is it a useful as it would seem to be?

The greater number of filters do help maintain depth in highly mineralized soils. And I also use more filters when I hunt wide open areas, with larger coils and a faster sweep speed. I use the lesser number of filters when I sweep more slowly with small coils, in nasty-trashy areas. My problem with the DFX is that I'm always tweaking it when out in the field. Adjustments are good. But, too much of a good thing, ain't always the best. HH Randy

The X-100 also switches from 2 to 4 filters. Both the X-100 and X-200 are, simply put, incredible machines. Heavy pigs and they take 12 AA's, but they will match any high end detector on the market. They're also hot on small gold and, from what I've read, were THE detector for nuggethunting in New Mex a number of years ago. ..Willy.
