2 days with the XT70

New member
Hello All,
Received my new XT 70 the other day and went out with it yesterday and today for about 5 hours total. Found 7 silver dimes (2 mercs), 2 rings (junk) and about a dozen wheat's. Just trying it within a block of my house just to learn the machine. I will say, I am pleased. It will take some getting used to since I am no pro but, have enjoyed getting back out. Oh, yes, I found a lot of junk too. Just have to learn how it responds to different metals. Have gotten the LF 9" coil (haven't tried) and won the HF 6" DD on EBay. I think I need the 6" for what I'm doing right now. Thanks for all the recommendations and help.

Well congrats on the silver!! Man 7 in one hunt is awesome, and a ring! I would say you did great, Beale.

Take out the 3khz coil and it'll find you silver in iron. Good depth too.

Thanks, I'll try the LF coil tomorrow when I get off work. Will try to keep an update with out boring the others.

Okay, this will be the last update. First, I love my new detector, it has actually brought the fun back into the hobby for me. Today 2 hours out I found 1 1951 half dollar, 6 wheat's, one modern nickel, 2 modern dimes and a rusted penny that I cannot identify (plus three pull tabs and one matchbox car). Have not cleaned anything yet but the silver is SILVER. I have been listening to all of you in reference to settings, GB and such and I must say I am pleased again. I have been testing the detector at a site that is about 1 mile from my house. Through some research I have found that there was a store there about 50 years ago. This site is right next door to a active gold mine (Cotton Patch) in Stanly County NC. I have ordered but not gotten the 6" double d coil. When it arrives I will try my hand at prospecting in the same area. I have been using the stock coil but will change soon to see what else happens. Already have the LF (3khz) but have not tried it yet. If anyone has any suggestions as to what and how I should look for in reference to settings, I will be glad to try.

Thanks again, (if anyone is wondering ,I'm a Paramedic this is the only part time job that has a sure return. Maybe not rich but always fun, love the history!!!

PS I have never found a half dollar before. Also, mad a small scratch it the half dollar (thought it was rock) because I use a baonette as my digging tool.

Well a big congrats on the Half!! Man you are on a great site for sure! Keep up the great hunting, Beale.

That is great to hear hogedog!! In the short time you have been using your x70 you have surpassed me quite surely in the age of your coinage. I am still yet to find a wheat or anything around that age with my X70 but I am searching in parks. I need to do a little more historical research and start searching there ;). Luckily I have downloaded many sanborn maps of my area before the site closed it's usual username/password access. Time will tell and persistence is key and by hook or by crook I will too someday find a wheat or silver and such. Good job and happy hunting to you ;)

I APPRECIATE ALL THE SUPPORT. I believe I am in the best spot in NC. Possibility of gold CW relics or what have you. The spot I go to is about one acre, I try different settings as reccommended on the web site. I am no expert, just lucky and in the right spot and try everything. I can post pics if anyone wants, made a scratch i the half. If any one is ever coming to NC, just call.
I'm in the Piedmont, about 15 miles south of Salisbury.

Well you off to a get start with that new machine, Great finds I only found 1 merc dime and 4 wheat's since April. You seem like you have a real hot spot...I would love to see the pictures!

Crocket,
I will use my sons digital to show some pics. Do you want pics of the finds or where I'm detecting? Today I tried the 6" HF coil and found a couple wheats, it screams on foil and pull tabs. I will have to take pics of where I'm at on Sunday because tomorrow I work and Sunday is my next day off. The 6" seems to find a lot of junk but I have to try the different coils to see how they work. I have not used the low frequency yet. I tried the HF since the house site I'm at is right next door to the gold mine. It came in the mail today so I tried it. I need to bring boots and a shovel because the divider between the house and the mine is a creek. A whole bunch of bamboo so I won't be able to cover it all. Thus far I have had very good luck. It has been a confidence booster for me. The forums have helped a lot. 20 years ago there was no such thing as a forum for metal detecting. The merc dimes I gave to the guy that owns the property for letting me search, the rest I have. I'm not sure if you can look up the spot on the internet but it is right at the corner of Gurley Rd and Hearne Rd in New London NC. Or, try looking up Cotton Patch Gold Mine or Mountain Creek Gold Mine they are right next to each other.

Will send pics as soon as I get the camera.
Thanks,
JFK

Sorry about the picture quality, I'm not to good at this. The Match Box car was just a hood I through out. The plane I found today with the HF coil. The dimes are with the owner of the property. All he wants is the silver dimes and that is more than okay with me. If anyone wants to see where I am hunting at I will send pics. I believe those will be better. It is nothing spectacular just a house from the 30's and a site where a store was. What year the store went up or down, I do not know.

I forgot to add that I did not save all the 44, 45 and shotgun shells that I found. Junk to treasure wise I have done okay. I am able at this point to read the difference to foil and pull tabs. But, if in any question at all I dig it. Till I am familiar with the coils, settings and the machine, I will dig the trash. But so be it. I don't know how the others detect in all metal because I get far to many signals. I have it set at...threashold 7, volume 24, GB 28, senstivity 24, mode 1?, Hmmmm, I think. I just try different stuff. Like I said, I work my job, get off, metal detect (once I do my "honey do" list). Any suggestions I will gladly take in reference to settings. This fall I will look for gold in the Uwharries. May not do so good but I will find something.

It looks like you are doing great. The only suggestion I might make would be to turn thr threshold down to maybe 3,4, or so. Randy (Digger) made a good post on running low threshold to be able to hear those faint hits.

Are you setting thr GB by auto mode? I really am just wondering. Around here I tend to see mine come in in the 40-60 range. Once in a while it will come in maybe upper 30's.

I can not hunt AM either. I tried but just get to many signals. I also run pattern 1.

Good job with the hunting so far. Maybe we could get together and do a hunt. You are not that far away, Beale.

Icehouse,

Sorry, not ignoring you, just posting. Not sure where you live or where you hunt. I don't go to parks, the beach or anything like that. I like the old home sites. You dig trash but always the possibility of treasure. There is much history in the local area where I am at. I know many people her with farms, storries and what have you. For me, it's not like being in the city. I am in the country and love it. Everyone seems to have a story of lost treasure here it's just trying to find the time to go to each place. Good luck and get rich and say I knew that guy when........................................

Beale,

If I run the threshold at 7 otherwise I can't hear it. As far as the ground balance I have set mine manually. I will not say either ones is the best but it has worked for me so far. In reference to hunting, I would be delighted. No one around here does any detecting as far as I know. I have followed the advise in reference to GB, I think I have it set right. If you are ever in this area you are more than welcome to hunt. I think you said you were in Burlington? That's not far from here. As a Paramedic I work 1 day off 2.......Just e-mail and I'll send you my home #.
See ya, and good luck!
