2 coils, older site--what do you recommend?

Hi, everyone,

I'm most interested in finding older coins. I tend to use the Hi-pro and deep silver programs the most.

I have the V3 with the stock DD coil and a 5.3 concentric.

I'm posting this to see if my logic is correct or if some have a different idea.

Here goes:

When I get permission to hunt a place that likely has not been hunted before, which coil should I start with?

My logic is to start with the 5.3. Here's why:

It separates trash from targets better, and if a place has never been hunted, the chances are that it will have lots of trash.
It's lighter and easier to swing for a longer time.
It seems to go just as deep in my ground conditions as the DD
The DD seems to really like bottle caps, no matter how high I turn up the bottle cap reject
The 5.3 is much easier to pinpoint with.

The disadvantages are, I cover much less ground per sweep and I have to go pretty slowly with the 5.3.

So, given the choices, am I probably doing it right to start with the smaller coil, and once I've done the yard, go back with the larger one, or is there some reason I'm missing about using the larger one first?

Also, is there a good reason for getting even a larger coil than the 10 inch DD that comes with the V3, for the kind of hunting I'm doing?

Thanks to all who respond.

Mike

In a old yard, I think it depends on how it was used and by who. I start off with the larger coil first to see if there are a lot of targets close together. I don't consider a target as trash until I dig it up and see what it is. I dig most every thing in a old yard. If the targets are very close together then I go to a small coil. After That I go back to the bigger coil and try to go deep. By then all the shallow targets are dug up.

I don't think there is a right or wrong way to hunt a yard Mike. Since few, if any, of us do this to supplement our income, and as long as you are having fun and hopefully finding some goodies, you are doing it right.

Larry,

Good point.

What's your stand on coils larger than 10 inches? Do you think an "average" detectorist could/should use one?

Thanks,

Mike

Time to hunt the site? If you can take your time and come back over and re-hunt the site...then a small coil will work IF you see lots of targets.

The stock coil should do a good job.

When (?) the BigFOOT coil is made...use for better coverage on large sites.

I seldom use a larger coil than the 10X12 SEF for larger yards, in fact the only coil I have that is bigger is a Bigfoot. I use that for clad gathering in sports fields and beach combing. Larger coils do have their place though like if you are hunting large fairly clean ground where some deep targets are known, like relic hunting.
