Was out with Diggin Jimmy Hoffa this weekend and pulled a 2 cent piece, came in solid 10-43 at about 5 1/2 inches. The shield side of this coin has a solid layer of crud on it, I am looking for tips on cleaning this one. I have read a few articles on cleaning coppers. I would like to try the peroxide method. At this point i just want to get a date on it. Also found a few indians and a buffalo i will try and post some pics tonight.

A picture would help. "Crud" is a vague term. If it is dirt or light corrosion, peroxide will help, but will darken the surface. If it is heavily crusted corrosion, electrolysis will remove it, but if the coin surface is damaged it will look pitted. Sometimes I tap heavily encrusted coins with a hammer and the crud breaks off, but that method is not for the faint of heart. Give it a whirl in the hot peroxide for a few minutes and see what happens. If you are the patient sort, olive oil works too, but one indian head took 2 1/2 years of soaking to really improve.
