Whew...finally broke into the 1800's yesterday....barely. An 1899 Barber dime...sweeet! A friend and I have been detecting a site off and on where a construction crew has removed a swimming pool complex from one of the city parks. The park used to be the fair grounds in the mid to late 1800's so there's been a lot of silver coinage found there over the past several years. I missed out on the easy pickings of course, that was before my detecting days. Long story shorter, the crew is finishing up now. All the concrete and sidewalks are gone and they're just leveling the site out now. We found out today that we missed out on going through the pool's old sand filters!!(GAH can you imagine what was in those!), they're buried deep now. Anywho, I dug up a very nice 57 Washington quarter and then about 5 feet away hit an bouncy signal that produced my Barber dime. Only the second I've ever found and oddly enough from the exact same year! A break for lunch and a brief rain shower and I returned to detect the rest of the day. The construction crew has been very accomadating to allow us to hunt while they're working. I picked up 15 (!) wheaties, (1912, 1916D, 1920, '24 S, '40D, 3x 1944, a '48, '50D, and 2 1952 D. The last three are too badly corroded to read unfortunately), a 1924S Mercury, and two Rosies, a 1949 and a 1962. For the first time ever, my clad numbers were less than 5. A couple of pennies, a dime and a nickel. Three of the wheaties came out of the same hole....my third pocket spill hole in a week. The first pocket spill, from another site, included 3 wheaties and the '43 Washington quarter in my picture. The second pocket spill was a big disappointment.....3 Burger King tokens. Imagine my excitement when I saw three large silver-gray colored coins in the bottom of my hole!! And then you can imagine my grumblings as I discover what it is that I've found....lol. The religious medal came from another detecting trip and is dated 1830. The horseshoe shaped piece is a piece of copper that I just knew was going to be a big silver coin (it hit at 12/47). All my wheaties fell in the 12/40 range for the most part. The silvers were all hitting as expected 12/44-45 for dimes and 12/46-47 for the quarters. The only deep find was the three wheaties/silver quarter spill at about 8 or 9 inches. The others all were 6 inches or less. The political pin was a surface find and is missing the back, but still neat. The pin is probably from the swimming pool lockers, a neat bit of local history.
