1st time out with the V3i

I just got my V3i yesterday afternoon and today I went to an old house in town that is now an Insurance Office. There wasn't much yard to search as the back yard is paved for parking and the area around it has a lot of trash and nails. After just a few minutes I turned off the V3i and got out my XLT. I didn't know there was so much trash and the signals were just all over the place. I took the XLT that I have been using for several years and went over the same area and found it was infested with nails and junk from the house next door that was torn down. I got out the V3i again and decided to just stick with it and slow down my swing speed. Long story short I think I was getting the hang of it after 3 hours and I did manage to find 3 old wheaties and some clad along with a few pull tabs and junk. I will have to do some more reading and get in some more time in the field before I can start asking some of you old pros some questions. I tried to post pictures but they didn't go through. Thanks for listening, Jim

I haven't tried anything but the C/J program so far. I have a lot of reading to do so I hope the tips from you guys keep coming. Thanks, Jim

Trashy ground is a headache for any detector and a small coil is almost a must. The High Trash programs helps but a small coil and ultra slow hunting is the way to go.

Hello Jim,
Sounds like you did well to get those wheats out of a trashy area like that. When dealing with trashy areas don't be afraid to stick with the Stock D2 coil. All to often we detect in 2 dimensions. This being the width of coil verses the amount of trash in the ground. Try thinking in 3 dimensions as you hunt a trashy area, Don't be afraid to raise that D2 coil off the ground a bit to get a narrower field to probe around the trash. Because the D2 coil is a DD coil the field tappers down like a wedge. Raising and lowering the coil gives you a entire range of different size coils so to speak. Believe it it or not it's the length of the coil that becomes the problem not the width. A slow coil movement, low filter settings and slower recovery delay is key when using this technique. Three frequency pinpoint is your best friend in trash. Good luck!

Jack your remarks are always a pleasure to see and read on here.I have confidence in what you have to say.I am having serious problems with trying to save or restore a program.Whites gave me pretty explicit instruction on how to restore a factory program.a few clicks from the expert menu and retrieving the program you want to restore from the library and whala there it is.I am probably misreading or tapping the wrong key.
I have this sinking feeling I've corrupted something somewhere and may require factory intervention, which incidentally I'm not too keen on with the season almost underway.
The problem I"m seeing is when I go to restore/....... Click into the c/j on the library menu,I'm unable to find it in the name menu offered at the top of the screen.I was told it would default to the c/j sceen but not so!!!When I search it out I get every menu but the c/j I seek.
This is starting to feel like an exerise in futility or my ineptitude. The latter probably more likely. Thanks for any thoughts you may have before I sell or send this puppy off to its maker

leojack,
Until Jack shows up you might try looking on your on board manual. Go to expert menu.
Scroll to RESTORE/LOAD. Hold MENU/TAB and ZOOM/VIEW buttons at the same time.
Your are now in the onboard manual. You are in the area that explains "About Programs".

Scroll down to HOW to.... (1st entry) Recover an erased factory program.

Just follow directions. Good practice for getting around the menus and believe me you will need it if you load
any programs from the forums. Hope this helps. Rebel8

Thanks to all for the information. I went out today for a few hours and tried the High Trash program over the same area I went yesterday. I really liked it and found another 1944 wheat cent and some clad. I used a lot slower swing and I am now starting to look at the display and put it together. I think I am going to like this rig. I sure like the wireless head set. Thanks again, Jim

What would really help you would be the little 4"x6" coil. Not only would it be great for the "Trashy Areas" it also helps in the learning curve, or for me it did.

Slower sweep speed can make all the difference - especially with lower filter settings - keep trying different settings till you get it to all come together for your area and style of hunting. I agree that smaller coil can make it easier to learn and find correct settings.

Hi Leojack,

Nope, you haven't messed up the factory programs at all. So, now I'm guessing what you have done is to rename your Coin&Jewelry to something else rather than copying it. I just did that to make sure I see what you're seeing. I renamed my C&J to ABCDE (just going through the process :) ). Then when I went to restore/load, you're right - it's not in the list. Go this route instead:

Expert menu>Program>New/Copy
Select Library program, check Use library name, then select C&J in your program list. Menu/tab to Create and press enter. That will bring your C&J back from the library. If you don't check "use library name", you will have the option of giving it any name you want, but it will have the C&J settings in it.
