1st time out with the Sovereign GT

Only one post on this whole page depicting finds........

Ok in response to another thread detailed above (apologies have forgotten who posted it), thought I would add this in the hope that I can read others finds/reports.....(2nd hunt also follows on..)

I bought the Sovereign GT on the Wednesday - to use on the 1st hunt the following Sunday........... after much looking around a different machines on the net the one that I kept coming back to was the GT..... a consistent line amongst users seems to be "killer on wet sand", good enough for me.

Firstly this was quite a big step up........was using a basic Viking machine that did like the wet sand but I was concerned about its all round performance depth wise, but the Viking had served me well and it paid for the upgrade inside a year. I will also add that I night hunt beaches - I love the peace and quiet...

Secondly I am so busy with work that apart from charge the batteries - and tiredly look at a load of forums to see what settings to use (which confused the hell out of me - looking at too much stuff, but some things I remembered) that was about all the preparation I had. I would imagine that not many people arrive on the beach for a 1st hunt with a machine and start having a look at the instruction manual..........but that's what I did. Finding the ON dial was the first task achieved......

About a minute flicking through the manual I just couldn't resist going for it.........learn as I go....

So I stuck in Disc ON - put the Disc dial about 3 - Notch 0 (didn't understand at the time what that did anyway!) Volume MAX and SENS 12'oclock

OK, so start with a slow sweep - the mosquito in my ear (the hum) tells me that it is stable - two steps forward and my ear drums explode, turn volume down - sweep over the spot and dig.......... 8 inches down is a

Great story and finds! The beach is a great place to learn the Sovereigns. The GT is basically a turn on and go detector. 0- disc. 0- notch and dig everything especially the whispers. Just set the sensitivity high enough to maintain a stable audible threshold in discrimination mode with a medium/slow sweep speed and it will go as deep as you will care to dig.

As Crazyman stated the GT is fairly simple. I get better depth in discrim. mode. I set the disc and notch at zero iron mask on. Just enough power to keep it stable and away I go. Get a good scoop. Target recovery time is a valuable thing. Keep that control box dry. I also suggest toggle boots. According to the experts sand will eventually get in them toggles and raise hell. The GT is fun.

Will look into that - I am hip mounting at the moment and less than impressed with the hip mount cover, so I will be doing some sort of modification to take care of that as well.

Have also been reading about the spray on coil liner - will give that some thought too.

Will drop the 3 down to a 0 next time......... thanks

GREAT field report! First time on a beach with my GT I got a gold class ring. I think it was the first target I dug and within like 5 minutes or so of getting there. If memory serves I think my second beach hunt produced a silver woman's ring that was real deep and also within minutes of getting to the beach. Somehwere back in this forum I posted a field report on those two outtings. Both were not in the water but the silver ring was in wet sand and muck. I couldn't believe how hard it hit on a thin ring that deep. Still waiting to dig my second gold ring on the GT but haven't been beach hunting much. I think a lot of the beginners luck type stuff that goes on with detectors has a lot to do with not falling into bad habits. Once we learn what we "think" a good target should sound like we start getting picky. Of course that's not really a problem on the beach where you want to dig any and all signals. Enjoyed the report...

Looks like you are off to a very good start with your GT!!
Finds like those will quickly boost your confidence in that detector.
Congradulations,
Felix

Good story and very nice dig's for your first outing's. I think you will enjoy your GT.
Good hunting Gary

Thanks to everyone for your comments,

Will continue to write reports whether they are good or bad finds............ lots of knowledge within the forum for me take note of so I will be reading everything with interest.
