1st Time Out With the Scorp

Two hours and quite a trip. BIG difference from the ACE 250 which gives us a display and low-mid-high tones to help along and babysit. Scorp gives out only one mono- tone and nothing to look at. Felt like I was flying blind and found myself instinctively looking down at the control panel for a readout that wasn't there. Was hunting in auto using A/M mode. No pinpoint button but found it surprisingly easy to do by letting the tone roll off the toe of the coil. No problems in that department. I'd say it's as easy, if not easier than the pinpointer on the ACE 250. The rest of the learning curve is gonna be a trip is gonna be a trip though.

Wish I could say I dug this Mexican peso but I didn't. But at least I did get it while out detecting. I was out there swinging in the park when I was approached by an elderly gentleman interested in detecting and he wanted to know where he could get a detector so I referred him to the local dealer here that I use. Seems he owns some property in Mexico and a few years back he'd had an old decaying adobe fence torn down and out plopped 100+ silver pesos--1700's--1800's & 1900's. He still owns the property and is going for a visit next month--wants to take a look around with a detector. After a long and engaging conversation, one thing led to another and he walked home (4 blocks away) and returned with his only 2 remaining pesos. He sold me one and gave me the other. Hella nice guy. We exchanged contact info and we're gonna check with each other when he gets back in January. Just thinking back over the less than 3 short months I've been detecting, I've never had any sort of negative experience/encounter with anyone. They've always been upbeat, positive, interested and friendly and I've met some interesting people. Shows me this hobby has more than just one kind of pay-off.

Good job Mufar...I use the disc control to i.d targets even of I'm hunting in all metal..just switch back to disc mode and see what appears or disappears.

Right on Bearkat. I was doing a little experimentation with that. Sometimes when I used the disc control, the target disappeared so I ignored it. Other times the target was still there but a lot weaker but I dug most of them. The real weak ones I just passed on or the ones only giving me a one-way signal. Maybe I shouldn't have---dunno. Had been keeping the disc. at the default setting. What setting do you normally use? I did notice though, when I actually was over a good target (coin) the tone in disc mode sounded a lot sharper and seemed to cut off sharply. When over trash it seemed to have a slight fade when swinging over it without such a sharp cut-off.

I usually keep mine set on 6 as little gold nuggets still ring out at that setting and iron starts to go away. So I will adjust it in the field, from 6 - factory setting sometimes.

Typical hunt, similar to what I find. Did you notice how hard the scorp banks on those round pulltabs? Youu are right on track! Keep it up and lots of rings will start showing up. The best suggestion I can give at this point is to develope good speed & strength for retrieving targets out of the ground.

Do you ever get a super fast almost inaudible double blip when sweeping over a pulltab after going into the disc mode? Was out again today and after switching from A/M to default disc mode, got that on some of the pull tabs but not all. Maybe I just didn't hear it on the others. Have been keeping the depth adj pretty much maxed out. Just wondering if that might be a way of identifying them? The Scorp does bang hard on em just like a coin except for that double blip I seem to be picking up. Played around with the disc trying to get the pull tabs out but had to take it up to 8 which knocked out nickels and wouldn't bang on gold. Scratched that idea. Fooled with the manual g/b a bit today and it brought up another pull tab a little deepr down on a patch I'd just swept using auto. My take-home loot was pretty much on a par with yesterday. Yeah, gotta get better on the diggin. Think I'm still quite a ways off from that screwdriver technique.

Congrats on the Scorpion and on the finds. I had more nails my first time out. I run my Scorps Dics at around 5.2 to 5.5 but never really over 5.5. I have had mine since the end of July and have found that if you are working an old farm of where there was old buildings that used square nails you may not want to over look or Dics out those nails cause sometimes that iron will cover or cancel out those old coins if you have your Dics set to high, just a thought and keep working your machine cause it sure is fun.
