1st Time out with Racer

[attachment 334915 082816003.JPG]Having been away from the hobby for over 10 years with health reasons, I decided it was time to return. Being a beach hunter, mostly wet sand and in the water I understand these machines very well. Before I left I had hunted the resort strip here in Va Beach, VA for near 20 years. I have used Fisher and Minelab products exclusively. Now the Red Racer...well out of the box a low battery error. This took some time to clear as I figured the board still holds some capacitance. Once this was cleared by pulling batteries and leaving out for about 30 seconds all seemed well.

To the beach I went, left settings pretty much stock in the beach mode. Machine seemed a little chatty but let in run with sensitivity at 70 and never lowered. The one thing I noticed was the clumping of most all targets in the 82-86 range. I don't use these numbers because I dig most everything, this could be a problem for those that hunt the dirt and rely on this information. The next thing I noticed was lack of depth, but I think most targets today where shallow. This will be investigated on further hunts. Now I noticed some erratic behavior of the machine on the beach and discovered once home that with the machine in the off position, you could move the machine and the screen back light would come on for about 5 seconds and go off. I thought how is this possible ?

I think a loose connection on the printed board or a cold soldier joint is to blame, I pulled the battery cover and re seated all connections and the problem is gone now. I will call Rep Monday morning and discuss further with them the issues. My plan is to use this machine for a week at least and see how it shakes out if they will allow it.

Over all even with the issues I am well pleased with the results considering it is a single frequency machine. Stability in the wet sand is very acceptable. Plus the fact I came away with a $400 Victorinox Swiss Army watch. Interesting though every target except the nickles ID at middle 80's. The nickles where at 54. Once I get the issues sorted out I will re post if this machine is a keeper.

Racer is a great machine for me mine doesn't I'd everything in the 80's zinc pennies come in 77 and copper 79 dimes 81. Quarters 84-87. And gold rings 57. But I like the Racer it will for sure pull the targets out of the bad grounds.

It is odd everything in the picture except the nickels ID in mid 80's but with a very strong tone in beach mode. Time will tell in the next few days.

The Racer1 and Racer2 make great salt water beach detectors. We had a nice erosion event at a beach in Monterey last winter and I used my Racer1 in beach mode there (did turn up the gain) and it performed very well, matter of fact a particular berm had eroded away and deposited it's old coin and jewelry holdings onto the beach. A group of locals had raced through the area trying to cherry pick the targets, but in their haste, they left me a nice target rich field of old coins! The trick, go slow and investigate all targets. I ended up getting a nice barber quarter, buffalo, several wheats, indian, and a silver ring. My friend who was using an Explorer2 with the 11" coil (I had the 10" coil) did equally well as we went slow through the berm target field, and we did several target checks. I could hear everything he could hear, including some quite deep targets.

One thing I would point out, is that the Racer2, IMHO, would have a slight advantage over the R1 because it's not as hyper (false signals). Run both machines over the same patch of dirt/sand and you'd immediately notice the difference.

Hope you get the R1 issues sorted out, as I feel you'll be plenty happy with it. Also there is a now a nice assortment of NEL and Mars coils available, so you may look into a larger coil for beach hunting then the 11" factory coil, although it should do fine.

HH,
Brian

New power board on the way from dealer. I will say that is service and a stand behind your product guarantee.
If it solves the issues all is well...The end of the week will tell the tale.

Yep, mine is a bit off so i guess it was somehow calibrated differently? at least thats what im guessing.

One thing I noticed is that with the Beach Mode being a two tone audio, the shallower items have a higher pitch due to being shallow (VCO). I don't use the meter at the beach as I just dig or scoop everything that hits so that's everything above where I have the ID Filter set. I'm swinging along and get a high pitched hit, scoop and out comes a nickel. What the hell? I thought it was a quarter by the sound because I'm used to hunting in three tone and getting a high pitched tone on quarters. I seldom use Beach Mode as I use the Racer 2 on the Dry and a Sovereign on the wet, but every once in awhile I'll drop onto the wet from the dry just to see if it's producing. Most of the time, the Three tone mode will work pretty good on the wet sand but sometimes I've had to use Beach Mode to get the Racer to GB. On the red Racer, I can see your targets hitting in the 80's except the nickels.

New board has arrived, will be out after storm passes off the coast here. Great service, now if it fixes the issues all will be good.

New board installed, first day out after storm here. Not good...16 blocks in the wet sand, one dime, one scrap of metal.. Machine did not act well or play well. Ground balance at 01 to 03, not normal for this beach. Very unstable today with signals and no vid... Nothing in the hole after 5 scoops and 14" plus deep. I am at a loss with this performance. Really not sure what the next step is....

before my racer died 2 days ago i was going onto the wet sand and it was quiet, a lot more stable than even my excal and was finding a lot of stuff. got to the beach on wednesday, and it was dead. no new batteries or anything would get it to boot up. So im thinking racers are faulty, im going to tell them that they can fix it or buy it off me cause im not keeping it if its going to keep dying.

Is this this racer 2? your talking about.

New board has failed after second use. Lo battery error again. Company exchanged unit for a machine of my choice. I am really undecided about the Racer at this time. It had a good platform I think...just some issues that show up in some units still needs to be resolved.

:(

Hello. Did you contact us directly?
This could have been resolved easily.
Who changed the board and which board are you referring to?
The solution offered has to be the right one to fix the issue.

Zinc Penny, you are correct, the Racer series are good very good detectors. I have owned brand new detectors from Tesoro, Garrett, Fisher, White's, Minelab and XP and others that had problems. Some were minor and some very irritating, so I had them resolved then made a keep-or-sell decision.

In the case of the Nokta and Makro Metal Detectors, you are dealing with a type-flight company that is eager to develop top quality and top performing detectors .... AND THEN BE THERE FOR THE CONSUMER AFTER THE SALE!

A glitch is a glitch and can be resolved, then all is well. Some detectors hit the market and there are a lot of design failures and engineering flub-ups that make the unit a poor choice. With the Racer series, it can be a simple matter of one or two components and or a programming fix perhaps, but once taken care of, these 'good' detectors are even better. Get it taken care of, properly as per Dilek's encouragement, and once back in your hands, get out and hunt with it. The performance and value of these detectors is, in my opinion, unmatchable.

I dealt with dealer directly. I changed the board myself after it was mailed to me. The board in question was the power board. In as far as easy resolve, it should have never left the factory with issues. It appears there are sporadic issues with these units and either the power board or the main boards are the culprit. I have not been the only one to experience issues.

Hello. We had only a few of these repoted to us directly and we shipped thousands of these units worldwide. Every manufacturer wishes that they have 0 failure but believe me this is not easy to achieve even by the giants of the electronics industry. I still apologize though for the inconvenience. If you are still having an issue and would like to get a replacement, please send me am email with the serial number of your device, your delivery address and tel and I will get a new system box out to you.

I decided to just sell mine as is and someone else can fix it. Not worth my time.

Hello. My response to vabrik above applies to you as well.
If you would like to continue to use the Racer 2, just send me an email and I will take care of it.
No reapirs are needed.
Thank you!
