1st silver of '08/1st SLQ/fun with police/silver nulling?

We had a Nor'easter snowstorm headed in last night so I went out late for a last run at soft ground--it's been warm for a week. Went to the tiny spot near me that's produced a few nice things so far and I save for short, night hunts (when I should really be going to bed). After a bit of junk and a very tiny, iron toy hammer, I hit a spot where I was getting all kinds of signals but had a hard time pinpointing them, either in disc or AM. Finally turned down the sensitivity more yet--I already have to run it low here at about 2 or 3 due to the power lines on each side of a skinny triangle--and managed to start getting some separation. First out was a '43 Merc in Fine condition. (For whatever reason, my peak non-clad coin range seems to strongly be in the '40s.) Not far away pulled out a Ryan Family Enterprises(?) token. Then pulled out my first SLQ. :) Even if it's a no-date, somewhere from '17-'24, I was quite happy. Although I have found a 17x7 silver half reale, this is my next oldest silver to date and the only silver quarter I've found before was a '44 Washington. (Although I'm still learning, I think I'm mostly hitting well-pounded sites, etc.)

I was all excited about this tiny area but then my excitement was interrupted and turned to another kind with the arrival of the police. I'd just determined via the Sun Ray probe that an iffy signal was iron when I hear a few vehicles pass behind me. I think I must have heard them slow down because I turned to look to see a police SUV and car slowing down to a stop a little ways past me. Since I wasn't doing anything wrong and I've not had much issue with the police in town before (beyond an occasional "What are you doing?" out their window or a slow down to see) I just went back to what I was doing. I put the dirt back in and was dropping the plug down when I heard a voice or voices behind me. Figuring it must be the police, I started to turn around to talk to them when I heard two voices yelling "HANDS IN THE AIR". I quickly put my hands in the air. (Duh!) Can't recall exactly the order of what happened after that but I must have taken my headphones off and, when one told me to come down to the edge of the wall where they were I started to pick up my shaft (since it's attached to the control box on my chest) I got another "HANDS IN THE AIR". Fun, fun. It all worked out okay but was a pain in the posterior. Turns out some neighbors--who I'd seen come home 5-10 minutes earlier--called in and said, according to the most vocal (young more-aggressive) officer that I was "burying something in the snow". (There was no snow but it was due to start snowing soon.) I'll have to talk to a Capt. down at the station I sort of know and get his take on it. Seemed like quite a bit of overreaciton to me for no visible threat. (And this is a pretty mellow town.)

Anyhow, on both the Merc and the SLQ, it seemed like I was having nulling issues of some sort like I did w/ another silver dime a few months back. It was hard to get a repeatable tone at all in the same location and seemed to be nulling all around it. Yet, when I had removed the targets in all three cases (that I can recall), I couldn't find anything, iron or other, anywhere in the normal object interference distance I encounter (usually 1/2 to a full coils width away depending on the mass and composition of the interfering object). Anyone else encountered silver nulling at all? Thoughts?

Hello BlackX, whatcha runnin' SOV 'er Excal? Great story! Lets see some pics. Did you tell the police that you were burying the holes you just dug, so the joggers would not get hurt? Always an adventure out there, ain't it?

That was using a Sov XS2 Pro.

I'm having problems lately getting my camera to focus closely enough for decent coin shots. :( (I hadn't tried for a while but recently someone asked for a shot of a 3-cent piece next to some modern change and I tried again with no luck. Still haven't figured out why it's doing that.)

The younger police(man) had asked if I'd mind packing it up for the night and I said fine-it was late--but told them I had to finish filling in my hole.

Sometimes more of an adventure than others. I could have done w/o that last bit. :)

The best way I can describe it when I've seen it is that there is seems to be a halo of nulling close around it. (Haven't noticed it w/ copper yet that I can recall.)

Are these some of the deeper targets you notice this with? If it is this may be normal if you are not well experience with the Sovereign. On the deeper signals which will be very small area when sweeping the coil over it may be harder to get it to repeat if you go too far when doing the slight wiggle over it. This is why when trying to get the signal to repeat I always say just try to over just the target only which may be so slight of a movement with the coil as any further you may notice a null. What makes it even worst is when the coin is on edge and deep as some of these are only a signal from one way as when you turn you may just get a null. This is where the Sun Ray Probe is nice to find the target so you don't lose it completely once the hole is opened up.
Silver is the highest conductor out there BlackX, if silver nulls, you got issues mate!
I have wondered before if someone messed with the detector before I got it. But, as far as I can tell, it mostly seems to respond as other Sov users describe except that I don't seem to get much depth except on big iron. I've spent hours and hours going slowly listening for faint threshold changes and the faintest signal audio changes I ever hear usually end up being tiny bits of something nearer the surface. For the most part, I rarely get past 6". After my Explorer comes in, I've thought about sending it in somewhere to get it checked out. But I'm also going to a local club meeting for the first time this Friday and am going to take it along in case there is a more experienced--I've only been using it for a year, if very heavily--detectorist there who knows Sovs and can tell me if it's acting within specs.

These have been on targets that are around 3-5" (maybe 4-5"). On these I have been able to get a clean signal once I manage to pinpoint it (which normally isn't an issue for me unless there's iron near and switching to AM usually clarifies that for me) and do a skinny (skinnier than usual) Sov wiggle over it. From what you say, I'm wondering if these have been on-edge coins. (A probe was the first thing I bought for it--still don't have a second coil.)(And if relevant at all, this is with a BBS 800 coil.)

Thanks,

Got home after a long week and the location I was accosted by the local police last weekend was partially bare of snow and the ground is soft (even under the snow) so I was thinking of heading out again. So I got the bright idea of calling the local police dispatcher and asking them if it would be helpful if I let them know where I was going to be. She said it would be "very helpful". :) I'm headed out. Got my first SLQ last time about 10m before the police showed up--have high hopes for more\

2 zincs, 2 memorials, a '72 quarter I thought for sure was going to be silver since it was deep enough it wouldn't even read 180, a clad dime, a '44 and a '15 wheat, and some (expected but dug anhow) garbage. Detecting on snow--average 2"--was interesting. i don't think I got as much depth but boy did the coil glide smoothly on the frozen surfce.

I'm really liking my Cold Steel shovel--but need to find a better way to carry it.

Added about 4-6" on my across-one-shoulder strap for the hipmount bag and that helped a lot dropping it lower. Probably should add a strap to keep it tight against my side. Probe's stilll an oddity strapped on the main box though. Should really get an extension cabl and put it on the shaft-
