Taking my X-Terra out 2morrow to the coast for my 1st metal detecting at the beach. Any suggestion on which coil would be best I have all High freq. Coils the stock and 6" DD 18.75kHz and the 10X5" elliptical 18.75kHz any settings coil preferences ANY tips would be great I'd like to come home with something. I've started my 2008 count over since I got the X-Terra 2 day was a short stop 3 Penny's all new and a 1943 nickel. again thanks for the help this forum Rocks!

I would use the 5 X 10 DD in the dry sand, it's a killer for finding the small gold ear rings and chains. You can run the sensitivity higher and cover more area with it, you can also use it on the wet sand as long as no water can get to it. Your ground balance will change from the dry sand to the wet sand. Take the stock coil for using in the water or at the water line. The 5 X 10 is not waterproof. You could also use the 6" in the water, it just won't cover as much ground. If you don't want to be bothered changing coils, the stock 7.5kHz coil will work just fine in and out of the water. Get there right at sun up as the others who detect the beaches are usually out at first light. I don't do much beach hunting so others may have some good tips for you. Try to find out where most of the people congregate on the beach. Try walkways also. If you don't have much luck, try some of the out of the way places that most people with detectors don't hunt as much. Find out when the low tide is and try to be there to detect at the surf line and into the water. Be sure you don't get the detector box wet or go out so far that you get swamped with a wave.

Good hunting, John K

Wish I would have read this before I left I saved My detector but ended up face down in the water! Didn't have time to hunt much the 1st day we got there 70 degrees late hunted awhile the tide was in and the next day I went out it was 45 degrees tide still in! Course today It's raining cats and dogs and I'm dying to learn this machine! I want proof it's gonna perform better then my XL pro! thanks for all your help John and yes I'm still confused about the GB! tracking the off on a target. wish I had you along with me it would save me another month! found a 64 nickel though the 70 sure can ping those nickels which leads me to believe I'm gonna finally get some jewelery! even though I know I'm not GB or set right! Grant Did you see my 1905 liberty 10$ I found in nelson,NV while prospecting? Take care buddy
