Two buddies and I hit an old site this morning to start of the new year. My very first target I dug was was the 20 Mercury and noted when I got home that I kissed it rather nicely. All three of us scored a silver each, some wheats, clad, period and older bullets and the usual whats its and trash. My wheats were 18, 40, 44 and 58.
Anyway, we each started off 2014 with some older coins and misc. Happy New Year to everyone. HH jim tn
Congrats on some great finds to start the new year!
Mercury was the god of travelers. He had a winged hat and sandals, so he could fly. He carried a staff which also has wings and two snakes winding round it.
He was also the god of thieves. When he was only a few days old, he stole the cows of Apollo. Mercury made special shoes for the cows and made them walk backwards, so no-one could follow their tracks. Eventually Apollo noticed that Mercury was playing a new musical instrument called a lyre, strung with cow-gut and worked out that Mercury had stolen his cows. Apollo was furious with Mercury, but thought the lyre was wonderful. So they agreed that Mercury could keep the cows and Apollo would get the lyre.
Mercury was also the god of science and business. I think that he's the god of the Internet as well!
You aren't wasting any time getting some 2014 loot in the pouch!
Thanks for the Mercury write up, John - I'd been meaning to look him up, as I enjoy those coins so much.
Real nice 1st hunt.
everything John-Edmonton noted re mercury is cool mythology.
That dime - our "Mercs" are really winged liberty head, depicting Freedom of Thought.
When we were young and they were common pocket change we called 'em Mercs even if we knew differently from being collectors of U.S. Coins & Tokens. Too much of a mouthful to say winged liberty head dimes. The other common term that gets tossed re U.S. Coinage is "penny". We never have minted pennies, not a one. All are cents. The last tidbit I enjoy mentioning is the U.S. monetary system was designed to mesh with the Spanish milled dollar & reales. 8 times 12 1/2 (one real or bit) = $1.00 and you can guess where the term picayune came from - those 1/2 bit (1/2 real silvers aka "half bit" were referred to that way).
Sorry if I went on...just finishing my first coffee after getting up late ...
