1st Day Out with the XS - Falsing Problem

Michigan Badger

New member
Okay, I love the XS and it's very deep. But I get tons of false signals. I've learned to sort through them and dig the more solid tight signals. But why do I get so many high tone signals that lead to an empty hole? I hunt in Quickstart with sensitivity on 14. I'm using the stock coil and hunting very slowly. Thanks

Are you scrubing the grass? Are you in semi-auto or manual?

The more information you can supply, the better we can help you.

I tried scrubing and not scrubing and it seemed to make no difference.

I was in semi-auto mode.

Pull your coil cover off and check it for debris. If you have some there, then that can cause it. It pays to check it periodically anyway.

You should not be getting the falsing, especially at Sensitvity 14!! I hunt 28-32 in Semi Auto all the time and not too sure your soil is much different than the acidic jersey sandy loam soil.

I just got the new SE Pro coil for my XS, main reason was, I needed a new coil for awhile , since my 8 inch ML coils were falsing, due to heavy underbrush use over the years, thorn hits in the cable, etc. My stock coil was still fairly decent but that too was starting to false more than I liked( 8 years of heavy use).

Reasons: #1 Coil/Coil Cable bad to some degree
#2 Undo and then retighten the connector of the coil at the unit
#3 Did it come with another coil? if so try it.
#4 I heard someone say, although I have not have it happen, that the battery pack, especially the rechargeable ones can cause it, but I find that a stretch.
#5 I doubt it is the unit itself but perhaps.
#6 If it came with the Sunray Probe, that could be the culprit.

I literally had to hit my coil against a tree sometimes to stop the falsing, and LOL, it worked. Since I got the new SE Pro Coil, there has been no falsing on my 8 year old XS.......

OH, one other suggestion, if you have FAST ON turn it OFF and see if that helps..........I never use FAST ON, to many high tone readings (false ones)

Very unusual.

Have you reset to the Explorer's default settings by simply holding the on/off button down at start-up? Just making sure you have as it is sometimes an overlooked safe utility of the Explorer.

If you have and it still hasn't helped, disconnect the coil with the detector on. Generally there should be little difference with what you hear when the coil is connected or disconnected when detector on in it's default state with the coil in mid air away from an interfering source.

Try another coil if you have access to one.

Does sound like a dodgy coil or coil cable or the connector for the coil into the control box. It could be a shorting connection.

Failing that, if it does not seem to be a coil related problem.....it would be a good idea to send it into Minelab. There is really very little else that can be done by the end user( you) unless you are prepared to dismantle the control box and MAYBE on up a can-o-worms.

Take care

That was the first coil to go bad on me. I found out too late that it is not waterproof, just water resistant. I had mine in the surf and shallow ponds. It was a good coil at first but then started falsing alot to the point I finally put on the Minelab 8" coil and it was and still is rock solid. The stock coil now sounds like a somba rattle if I shake it. If it is new and you haven't dunked it in water then I don't know...but if you bought it used maybe other owner dunked it.....give it a shake and see if you hear anything rattling inside.

The bigger coils false the most....like the WOT 15" and 12" sunray when in wet grass....the new SE Pro11"coil seems to be real good and solid....just a tad of falsing but then again I use sens. at 27 and in wet grass and surf....but the best out there so far.

The small coils like the 8", 6", 5".....seem to be very stable.

Then of course like everyone else says...make sure all connections are clean and tight....the one on the coil itself should be hand tight...don't use a pair of channel locks on it or the others....just clean and hand tight....my fittings get a white corrosion on them due to salt at the beaches and can cause bad connections. Clean the contact points on the battery with a small flat screwdriver to expose clean bare metal for good contact to inner battery compartment.

You running at 14 sens. should be rock solid....there is definatly something wrong.

Try reducing the gain Dale. I may have left it on max when I sent it to you. It does get a bit noisy on some ground at 8, while others I had it maxed out with no problems.
I sent you my phone # and call if you have any more problems. Don't forget to noise cancel.
