This is as clean as I got it before going into work. Front and back are well worn as you can see. Is this normal? Also need help with you guys who know about these things sence this is the first one I've held much less dug.

Why is the date, which at first I thought was 1885---only made from 1807-1836 / from what I've found so far / look as though the stamp of 3 is over a 1 or something like that? don't know enough about them so is that normal? Also on the side(edge) of the coin I can make out "H A L F" and if you turn it I make out "E T and maybe a Y". Any help would be a blessing. thanks for lookin and HH.

Also here is a close up of the plate I found the other day with "Eddward Anderson 1962" on the front from the same yard.

According to my Whitman book the edge should be stamped with the words: "FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR".

You can remove a lot of detail when cleaning if you don't know what your doing.
Put the brakes on the cleaning and get it to someone who knows.

I've never seen a Silver coin with that much pitting.

Date looks like a 3 stamped over another number.

I hope it's authentic.

Hello Lee....the date looks to me like the coins is either an 1833 or 1835. but I would say 1835! The bottom of the three comes up to the middle section making it look like an 8...but don't think it is stamped over another number, just the way it was stamped and looks ! Good luck on finding what it really is and I hope it isn't fake and is real! It has a hole and is corroded, so it might not be silver! Nice Capped Bust indeed...I've never seen or held one either! Congrats! :clapping: God Bless! Betty

Nice find anyway. I agree - looks fake but should be checked out. Could just be the picture but looks like alot of "coppery" looking material peeking through and seems to be porous on the reverse. keep us updated!!

Hey 3RINGER, Nice find. I think it's counterfeit also. Take any other half dollar and drop it on a hard table surface, then take yours and drop it. The real one should ring nicely. The fake should thud! If it's white metal, then it will sound like lead and thud. I found a Morgan Dollar and a Standing Lib Quarter that were fake and they showed it by their sound. Also your machine should not get anywhere near the half dollar range of numbers. If it's fake, I think it's a better find then the real thing. It shows a lot of history and a lot of cunning to fake something, and not worry about getting caught. It was either ego or desperation on their part. Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks for the info, going to find a coin dealer in Murfreesboro to take a look at it. As far as the cleaning i'll leave it as is. first find like that and I guess i got overly excited LOL / need to watch that though sounds like you can really damage a coin that way.

As far as being counterfeit or real, the only place it's going is passed down to the kids. I'll let ya know what the coin dealer said.

thanks again and HH.

Counterfeits were common back then and looks to be one. (I work in a coin shop and do see them once in a while.) That is a GREAT find!!

Certianly looks suspicious from the picture here. But best to get that honker checked out before any more cleaning. I hope it is real ...that is a great find.
