Picked up the MX5 on the way home from a week in Memphis on business. Got up this morning to take it for its maiden run at a local tot lot. I really just wanted to get a feel for the MX5 and was using the stock coil and try to familiarize myself with the tones. This location is replenished on a regular basis so I knew there should be some shallow targets to recover. I was running the sensitivity at two notches from wide open and only discriminating out iron targets. My first obvious observation was the difference in the tones from the M6 with the MX5 tones haaving a much more digital sound. I was running 8 tone ID and it was really nice. My first find was a clad quarter at about 3 inches and the high tone was very consistant. The usual distribution of clad coins followed but had not happened upon a recognizable nickel signal which is my favorite coin to find because so many folks in this area cherry pick for the higher tones and leave them. One of my first things I look for in a new machine is how well it will find nickels and there are definitely some machines that will ID them better than others. i got a nice steady 18 VDI and knew without a doubt it had that nice round solid coin sound. Sure enough, my first nickel at about 3 inches. My next target was a pleasant surprise because I got a real nice high tone pwith a mid 80's reading but it was showing 7 inches deep. Since I rarely find coins at depth in this location, I assumed it was probably a deep piece of a can or something but my curiosity got the best of me and I decided to dig it up. When I got down there and uncovered a clad quarter I decided the MX5 was going to be a keeper. This machine seems to be a good one for coinshooting which is what I do 99% of the time. I cant wait to put the 5.3 coil on and give it a try but the Texas heat today forced me home after less than an hour. So far, so good with the MX5 !!
