I've gotten around 14 of them so far and they always come in at Fe 35 Co 31 and 32 with the Iron low tone, there not rare but fun to find.Open it up to accept 35-26 to 34 and the tone will be solid and repeatable 2 directions. My V Niclel's come in a solid 12-13 but with a high tone compared to all other nickels that have a low tone

I have never heard of anyone finding a steel penny let alone 14 of them:surprised:

WOW Congratulations and Thank You for the heads up as to the numbers we need to find our own steel pennies

How do they look? Do you have any pictures you can post of dug steel pennies? Are they rusted beyond being worth the dig?

They were zinc coated so they did not rust, I will look and see, I think I have one or two. Most of us never find them because of where they come in at but there were alot made.

When we were kids everyone hated them and we called them a suckers penny because everyone would pass them off for a dime. Myself and all my friends would throw them away because we didn't want to get caught with one in your pocket. If someone seen you with one they would call you a sucker because you got cheated out of dime for a steel penny. Yes there were a lot of them made before the war. Uncle needed all the copper it could get its hands on along with all the other metal.
Yes , I've collect 14 of them over the last 30 yrs but only about 5 or 6 from metal detecting. the reason no one is finding is because of the FE 35 number and the ones I have found are in very good shape, I think better than the average wheaty. I just thought if people would open up the Fe number I posted for the next 30 days it might prove interesting. Jeff 63 HH everybody

I have found 4 or 5 of them and they were always in a spill with other wheats and they were horribly rusted, using steel wool I was able to see an outline of lincoln.....steel pennies rust just laying in a humid enviroment. Buried in the wet ground for yrs and the completely rust

WOW Again

I thought as G4E that they are rusted out after being in the ground as Zincolns deteriorate within weeks

What location do you live in and does this ground allow many coins to stay in decent condition after years in the ground?

Thank You Again For Your Post

I found 1 and like G4E Mine was found in a spill and was rusted terrible. It took a few min just to figure out what it was. I am amazed by the one you found above. Mine you cant hardly make anything out on. Just a round rusted disk.

All the steel pennies that I have found (4 of them) have all been in good shape, much better then the average wheat.
