1943 pennies

My father passed and I got his small coin collection and in it were 2 mint 1943 pennies that look to be silver, I am sure that they are not but I have heard him refer to "Steel Pennies" I know this is not a detector question but does anyone know anything about that year pennies? Believe me I will have a lot of detector questioned soon I just bought one a week ago and have enjoyed it a great deal. At least I recognise all of the coins I have found with it. I know these are probably not rare just kind of odd.

well, they aren't exactly rare, they are made of steel. The reason for this is because the copper was needed for the war. If you find a copper 1943 then its extremely rare.

Thank you much Norton, I am learning quite a bit in this forum it is a blessing indeed.

If they stick to a magnet they are the steel pennies.

OK I kinda deserved that one. I can't even say that not even going through my first set of batteries yet lets me off easy.
