Had a good hunt today. My first dig uncovered my first buffalo nickel! Very excited, also found a 1951 wheat. Those were the best finds of the morning. Kind of bummed though. The buffalo nickel is pretty worn so I cant find the date. Any one have any tips for cleaning, in hopes that I might be able to recover the date? Thanks

There is a product called Nick a Date that will pull a date up on a worn Buffalo. The way it works is highlighting the compression from the striking process,... this may be impossible to discern on a rough surfaced nickel.

Thanks, after a little research I found that product myself. Wasn't sure about it, so thanks now I might try it.

I simply soak my nickels in Worcestershire sauce over night. You'll have to flip it over to get both sides nickel color again.

lime a way will clean up buffalo, and V nickels like no other and it does not pit the metal like vinegar does (the active ingredient in ketchup or Worcestershire sauce) here is a v nickel I cleaned with lime a way

Sounds like a combination of these two methods stand a better chance of pulling up a date. (A '13-S Type II would be something to pull out of a worn coin.) Great tricks!
