1942 Railroad Date Nail, Axe Head

I went along a dirt road and worked the easement for a little. I found the 1942 date nail in a railroad tie fence post. The ax head was by an oak tree about 4

Nice finds. To bad the nail is broken. Don't know what kind of price they fetch these days but there's quite a collectors market out there. They are getting harder and harder to find.
To bad the nail is broken.
It's not broken Bill, it's just the way the picture looks. I've been collecting them for years. I've got a few from the teens. Whenever I'm out and see a railroad tie for a fence, I look it over. I'll drag them out and take a pic someday.
Cool finds! I like hunting relics now and then for a change. :)
I've been relic hunting without a detector for over 40 years. I just can't get it out of my system.

Sorry, it looked broken in the photo. Glad it ain't. Have you ever walked the old rail lines or the beds where they used to be and watched for burn patches on the ground where they stacked and burnt the ties after tyey ripped the rails up? This is where the nails are.

I've been out of touch with the date nail collecting hobby for years. What are these things bringing on the collector market? I think I wrote an article on that subject about 20 some years ago.

Me to. When I was a kid I had a big shoe box full of arrow heads, spear points, tomahawks, flint skinning knives, etc. This stuff was laying around everywhere where I lived as a youngster Over the years of moving from place to place they all got lost or left behind along with a huge collection of old comic books that are worth a fortune today. I had original Superman, Batman, Captain Marvel, Captain America, The Flash, The Green Lantern, etc.

I used to have all of Elvis Presely's original 45 RPM Sun recordings, now I have one left. I had the first one he made ( which is worth a ton ) and it got stolen. The one I have left is worth about $1500 or so. Also had all the Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis Sun recordings.
