I use a tumbler with dawn dishwasher liquid, then rinse then white vinegar and salt. tumble for 1 hr. Wayne
 
All you need is a little water and baking soda mixed to a watery paste. Rub the crud off with your thumb. Silver usually cleans up nice and easy.
 
Or a tooth brush and dish soap. You don't want to polish it,,, it's not the way to go. If it is real black and ugly from tarnish,,there are ways to make it better with out polishing. How does it look??
 
Are you keeping it or is it getting sent away for melt? If it's melt I'd clean it up with a baking soda/ watery paste. Cleans up in seconds!! If it's a keeper I'd buy a small jewellery cleaner off ebay for 15 bucks and go that route. The jewellery cleaner works on a hi frequency vibration not doing any damage to the coin retainning the value.
