1922 Weak D cent...

Girlfriend left town for a several day conference and took the camera with her. Murphy's law suggests that this is a good time to go detecting. When you can't do a post and boast is usually when the better finds show up. And once again it worked out.

Only found a half dozen Wheaties but one of them is a 1922 in pretty good shape but with a very weak D. I don't have either the 22-D or the no D mint error so one less hole to fill in the collection.

(For those less numismatically educated- In 1922 only the Denver mint made cents, none from San Fransisco or Philadelphia. Apparently the Denver mint had some die crash problems and was told to fix things the best they could. They ended up polishing enough off the die to remove the D mint mark and created the 1922 plain.)

I think I will bring this one to a coin dealer. Looked at E-bay and saw a pretty wide range of coins and prices, not exactly sure how weak a D has to be to be worth something.

The rest of the date and obverse and reverse are quite strong, probably VF, but the D is very flat. If it is an altered coin it was done quite some time ago. I found it with a 1920 D in the same hole.

Will post pics when I get the chance.

Thought the ground would be frozen but not yet. Maybe not tomorrow either.

That's not fair Chris! I have to go to work in the morning and you get to go out swinging yet one more time! I'M OUTRAGED!!!:ranting: LOL! Good to hear you found a Coin you didn't have in your Collection. Sounds like a very nice one too. Do you have any 24-D's yet for your Collection? I have a few 22-D's and about 6-8 24-D's in my Collection. Lot's of the 24-D's up in this area are found each year for some reason and I can't complain about it. Can't wait until you post a pic of it and if you make it out tomorrow, Good Luck and HH.

Chris I have one too from last year that I could not even see the d with the naked eye. After taking a digital photo with a 5 mgapixil camera then croping it using the free picassa software from the internet did I see it. I am too currious about the worth. I did like you and looked on e bay. Nice find they do not come about that easy.

MetalMiester,

My D is not nearly as weak as the coin you posted, but still much weaker than a normal mint mark. I did some research into the die patterns. I suspect I will have to settle for just a plain 1922-D. The rest of the features seem too strong, overall grade is probably VF or better. Most of the no D/weak D coins the obverse is in bad shape because of the polishing. Apparently there are coins where the D was weak because the die got filled with dirt or grease, think mine is one of those or perhaps someone messed with it, which I doubt cause the weak D was not even an official variety until later.

I do have a 1924-D.

Just counted and have 11 slots in my wheatie folder to fill(excepting the 1943 steelies). Most are the usual suspects: 1909s, 1909s VDB, 1914 d., etc. But still have a 1954 to find. A couple years ago went through my thousands of wheaties looking for missing dates. Nada. Don't think I will do that again any time soon. All my collection is found; none purchased.

I had to reply because a couple days ago I found a 1922 "plain" in my wheaties from last year that I had forgotten about. It was in XF condition but had a few little blobs of corrosion on the obverse - one of them right where the mintmark would have been. My curiosity got me to hunting around for pics of the genuine 1922 "no D" and mine didn't match :sadwalk:. There isn't much demand for the weak "D" types that I've seen in all my years of collecting unless they are in very high grade... but they usually get a small premium in price.

Funny... I've been lucky enough to find all the key date wheaties except for 1931S and I need 1911S, 1913S, 1915S, 1924D also for a complete set. ( Sounds like I need to make a road trip out west and stop by ND where there apparently are lots of '24D wheaties to find  Nice find, though and keep them coming! HH, Mike.

I shouldn't have butted into this one in the first place. You guys know what your doing.
