1909-S.....

Indian Head!!!

Hello All,

I haven't been posting, or detecting much at all this summer and fall between too much work and dry conditions. However, we've had plenty of rain lately and I just finished up a big project so will have some free time in the next couple of weeks.

Snuck out for a hour of swinging before Nightfall. Walked half a block to the house where I found the 1838 Bust quarter last year. I had the 8" on but because of the taller grass went back and got the stock coil. First decent hit was an Indian head, I scraped off the dirt and saw it was a 1909 in good shape; thought- this would be a sweet one to have an S on. Flipped it over but didn't see anything.

However when I got home and had some decent lighting and my magnifiers on (One of the few good things about getting old and not being able to focus is that every metal detecting expedition now has two moments of discovery, once when you dig it and once when you get home and can read it.)

And there was an S under the wreath. First mint marked IH I've ever found and can't remember ever seeing any posted on the forums. 3-4 1877 IHs over the last few years.

And or course I don't have the camera. Will post a pic soon. Three years ago I found a 1916-D merc, but only in AG-3 condition. This IH is at least VF, perhaps EF and could be my most valuable find.

Earlier this year when silver prices where up I tallied up all the finds I've ever made metal detecting, and the cost of all the metal detectors I've every owned, starting with a Coin Hustler II at age 13. It then looked like I might have actually paid off all my equipment, unless you count batteries and gas, and digging tools and and and etc. This coin might have pushed me into positive territory, and perhaps even have a penny or two an hour pay for the thousands of hours I've spent playing in the dirt.

Now that is a real hard coin to find and in High Grade! I take it that you are going back to that yard sometime in the future to see what else may be waiting to be found after so many years. Congrat's and can't wait to see a Pic of your Indian Head. Good Luck and HH.

Very nice, Chris. I, too, eagerly await a photo of that IH. My recent Indian Head find was an 1888, which was also in pretty good shape except for some corrosion. I had wondered if it was an 8/7. It was evaluated by a local coin expert, who found it to be a plain old 1888.

So, congrats to you on an excellent and valuable find. You done good!!

I can't personally count the cost of ownership by the value of my finds vs. the cost of equipment, fuel etc. The fun I've had over the years and the hours spent hunting with friends is of far more value to me. That having been said, Istill haven't found the elusive gold coin or big diamond ring that would add a nice balance to the fun I've had and still have. HH to all...
