Found this guy at the local park with the Sovereign Gt.Just two weeks new to me. Got home and showed my girl as we were looking it up on line.I said to her "wow it's about ten bucks" She said "to bad it's not a 1909-s " I said where do you see that and she said the next one down. Wait a minute now let me get the loop out. I tried to show it the best i could.Strange enough the s on the back is easier to see with the necked eye than with with a loop .Do anyone have any ideal how much it's worth. Thanks and HH

:usaflag:Out of the ground it might be worth five hundred dollars to the right buyer. Congrats and always remember that day you found it, because you will most certainly never find one again..very, very rare indeed.

McDave, I'm a happy camper indeed. Thanks and HH

Mintage= 309,000
G-4= $200
VF-20= $300
MS-63= $650

Taken from '08 Blue Book. I wouldn't expect "max", being a dug coin.

Sweet find! Congrats! :thumbup:

:usaflag:Blue book being what a dealer "might" offer you. I would go with EBay or another reputable auction site. But I would document the find, take pictures of yourself holding it, because you will miss it after it is sold...lol...good luck !

If you do sell it I would be very interested to know how much you got for it....just out of curiosity.

Nice key find, congratulations!

Is it a vdb? Makes a big difference.... If a 1909S-vdb the numbers above are correct, if just a 1909S it's worth only about a tenth of the quoted guesstimates. The "VDB", if it's there, is on the reverse side (the 'tails' side) right at the bottom. A great find, anyway. Mintage: 1909S - about 1.8 million. Mintage 1909S-VDB - 484,000.

His 1909 cent was an Indian head and it was designed by James Longacre. It was the 1909-S VDB Lincoln 'wheat-back' that was designed by Victor D. Brenner.

Still, the 1908 S and especially the 1909 S Indian Head cents are great finds because they were the only IH's to be marked 'S' . TomTomNC did get a decent condition Indian Head.

OOps, you're absolutely right. I didn't even notice it was an Indian. When somebody says 1909 penny, my mind snapped to the scarce 1909-S vdb wheatie. Sorry for the error.

good find, I'd love to find an IH some day.

Heritage coin auctions sold a corroded cent like yours for $150 a few years back. I'd say $175 max today.

Excellent find. The 1909 S IH cent is still on my "things to do" list. Congratulations on a great find. HH Randy
