18K ring from an AWFUL beach...

Spent some time Saturday trying a couple unproductive beaches before I decided to head to one near Boston that I heard might have some finds. I had meant to drive by numerous times just to see the beach, but decided today was the day to just head down there and give it a run.

Now, for those of you from the Boston area, I'm sure you will cringe when I tell you I went to Revere Beach. For those of you not from the Boston area, let me just tell you that folks I work with warned me never to go there at night and that even during the day may not be terribly safe.

I wish I had my camera with me when I got out and started scouting it out because my description simply will not do it justice - let me try to paint you a picture however...

From a distance it looked like it might be a fairly nice beach although I could see lots of seaweed washed up, but that's to be expected. The neighborhood around it seemed a little run down and old, but there were some newer apartments/condos and reasonably normal looking people around - both walking along the beach as well as riding bikes on the sidewalks and such.

I got out with all my gear, fired up the detector and headed out to the sand. Within 10 feet, I got a mid tone signal and lifted out the attached small 18K gold band. I was excited, however within the next 5 feet, I realized the odds of me finding more were going to be very slim - there was garbage EVERYWHERE and I do mean everywhere!!! I would hazard a guess that just about anything you can imagine could be either on that beach or under the sand. I saw pounds of dog crap, paper and foil garbage galore, plastic, glass, metal junk, etc... and that was just what was on the surface - there was more disgusting stuff under the sand.

I stayed there about 30 minutes and in that time walked down to the water and back twice. I saw no less than 3 syringes and numerous condom wrappers.

When I got down closer to the water, there was far less garbage on the surface, but tons down below - now comes the really disgusting part. The first time I decided I had a signal that might have a half chance o f being something other than garbage again, I dug with my scoop and less than 2 inches beneath the surface of the greyish sand I pulled up a piece of aluminum along with a full scoop of dark grey/black "goop" which apparently was the base just below the sand - the overwhelming odor of sewage greeted me with the scoop and I quickly went down to the water, rinsed off my scoop and walked back to my car.

Just as I was walking off the beach (and trust me, I use that term very loosely for Revere Beach now) a large bus pulled up and a handful of large men in orange jumpsuits were paraded out and began walking around picking up a little garbage here, and a little there. The sight of these large convicts carrying long pointed rods impaling things was the last view I had before I quickly dumped all my gear in the trunk and drove off in a rush.

I'm thrilled to have found the ring below, but I have very strong doubts if I will ever go back there again. I'm fully confident that there is plenty of nice things to find there, but all things considered, I'm not sure it's worth it.

Enjoy the pic nonetheless[attachment 37474 reverering.jpg]

I can't imagine anyone laying a beach towel out and sunning there, swimming in the water there, or (God forbid) letting your young kids play in the sand/guk.

Boston should be ashamed of that beach and the people who frequent there should be ashamed of themselves for not taking good care of it.

Maybe it's just cause it's the end of the season and it doesn't usually look like that during the summer - I have no idea, and maybe someone who lives near there or goes down there on occasion can enlighten us. Either way, the state the "beach" is right now is horrendous and an embarrassment to the city that's for sure!

Well, the fact that you pulled THAT out of THERE is a testament to your skill and/or incredible luck. And worth the trip! Though I think I would be thinking the same thing...not goin' back.

I'm not really sure just how much good stuff there WOULD be there...who the hell with any class (or bling worth finding, for that matter) would want to go a LAY OUT out and/or SWIM at a dung hole like that? Really amazing that you found that ring right off the bat like that.

I live 20 miles north of Revere. The town doesn't have a good reputation, but its unfortunate, you have painted such a poor picture of the beach. During rhe summer, the city does a much better job of keeping it clean.Yes its too bad, they slack off after season.

A little dramatic don't you think, I 've been hunting Revere, for many years.I was there sat.morning and saw the jumpsuits. I got a nitrate ring with 12 cubies, a 925 earing, a silver plated earing. about 4.00$ in clad.In the past 18k gold black onyyx ring ,blue saphire with 2 diamonds and platnium band, many silver coins ,barber, seated, mercury buffalo, washingtons, rosies. The only thing is don't hunt there at night.

Since that was my only visit, I can only go by what I saw and it truly was not a good sight (or smell for that matter).

Someone at work told me they had heard the beach was shut down this year for a little while due to some kind of sewage release or something nearby - perhaps that's why it didn't seem to be very nice.

I would hope the city truly does do a better job of keeping it clean during the season - if so, I'll have to give it another chance next year. What really saddens me about places like this is that it's obvious the majority of the people who frequent it take no pride whatsoever in the appearance. If everyone who visited the beach would take away all the garbage they brought with them and then just a little more, it would keep the beach 99.9% cleaner - people just don't seem to care.

And since you frequent it far more than I have, I can only go by the one morning I visited. I was on the N end of the beach, and it's possible that the whole thing doesn't look the way that end looked.

Maybe I was a little dramatic, but truthfully I was shocked at the state of it. Is it cleaner there during the summer season?

I actually had no problem with any of the people that were around there - they were friendly for the most part. The folks I work with painted a picture of homeless people, drug addicts and prostitutes everywhere, but I honestly didn't think the people were anything different than I saw anywhere else (besides the convicts picking up the garbage that is).

I believe there has to be more stuff there, and I would love to give it another shot sometime, but please tell me that what I saw this weekend was not typical.

Grats on your finds too Bob!

purely to luck. I just happened to park my car and walk right across that ring - of course, in the back of my mind I can't help but think, "sheesh, if I stumbled across a gold ring like that, there HAS to be more stuff here!!"

As far as who frequents it and what kinds of things they could lose there, I'll be honest with you - the reason I went is because folks I work with told me that alot of gangs and kids with the big gold chains, earrings, etc... frequent that area, so it definitely should have potential.

Here in South Florida I find a number of condom wrappers, too, which is pretty gross, :sadwalk: however, it makes me want to concentrate on that area. Think about it... if people are "caught up in the moment" on the beach, possibly drinking, they could easily lose jewelry or money when the clothes start flying! I say that's your clue to slow down so you can recover what might have been lost!

actually, I didn't come across a single shell casing - that and the gold ring I found were two positives from the experience at least.

I didn't see any of those either!!
