Spent some time Saturday trying a couple unproductive beaches before I decided to head to one near Boston that I heard might have some finds. I had meant to drive by numerous times just to see the beach, but decided today was the day to just head down there and give it a run.
Now, for those of you from the Boston area, I'm sure you will cringe when I tell you I went to Revere Beach. For those of you not from the Boston area, let me just tell you that folks I work with warned me never to go there at night and that even during the day may not be terribly safe.
I wish I had my camera with me when I got out and started scouting it out because my description simply will not do it justice - let me try to paint you a picture however...
From a distance it looked like it might be a fairly nice beach although I could see lots of seaweed washed up, but that's to be expected. The neighborhood around it seemed a little run down and old, but there were some newer apartments/condos and reasonably normal looking people around - both walking along the beach as well as riding bikes on the sidewalks and such.
I got out with all my gear, fired up the detector and headed out to the sand. Within 10 feet, I got a mid tone signal and lifted out the attached small 18K gold band. I was excited, however within the next 5 feet, I realized the odds of me finding more were going to be very slim - there was garbage EVERYWHERE and I do mean everywhere!!! I would hazard a guess that just about anything you can imagine could be either on that beach or under the sand. I saw pounds of dog crap, paper and foil garbage galore, plastic, glass, metal junk, etc... and that was just what was on the surface - there was more disgusting stuff under the sand.
I stayed there about 30 minutes and in that time walked down to the water and back twice. I saw no less than 3 syringes and numerous condom wrappers.
When I got down closer to the water, there was far less garbage on the surface, but tons down below - now comes the really disgusting part. The first time I decided I had a signal that might have a half chance o f being something other than garbage again, I dug with my scoop and less than 2 inches beneath the surface of the greyish sand I pulled up a piece of aluminum along with a full scoop of dark grey/black "goop" which apparently was the base just below the sand - the overwhelming odor of sewage greeted me with the scoop and I quickly went down to the water, rinsed off my scoop and walked back to my car.
Just as I was walking off the beach (and trust me, I use that term very loosely for Revere Beach now) a large bus pulled up and a handful of large men in orange jumpsuits were paraded out and began walking around picking up a little garbage here, and a little there. The sight of these large convicts carrying long pointed rods impaling things was the last view I had before I quickly dumped all my gear in the trunk and drove off in a rush.
I'm thrilled to have found the ring below, but I have very strong doubts if I will ever go back there again. I'm fully confident that there is plenty of nice things to find there, but all things considered, I'm not sure it's worth it.
Enjoy the pic nonetheless[attachment 37474 reverering.jpg]
