Spent a few hours at a local beach with a fairly big cut today....yielded a nice 18ct Gold :) banged loud and hard with the ATX!

Hi dmnz,

Okay, it is apparent that you are the Gold King Beach Hunter :) with the ATX with the many postings of quality finds over the months.

Your posting of your find is like most posts that just show a photo of you find and a brief description of the find itself.

With you being the Gold King, what I would like to know and I am sure most of the readers would like to know is the back story of your finds.

Information like:

1) Photos of what the location and what the conditions looks like.

2) Information about detecting pressure from other's at that location? (by the quantity of quality of your finds, it appears you are the only one detecting those areas)

3) Are you detecting a Resort?

4) When you find something in the water, what are the conditions like, including; the water clarity, depth, any waves, surge, current, sea foam white wash, etc, that you have to deal with?

Here in Southern California trying to detect in the ocean is a constant battle with waves, current, surge, and cloudy low visibility water where you are lucky to see one foot down at some popular beaches.
The mental picture I have of where you are detecting is in a back bay or ocean where the water conditions are super clear, no waves close to shore, very little current, and no surge.

When I read any posting, I find it a lot more interesting with photos of the area and description of conditions. Some people get freaked out by the thought of someone seeing a photo of where they found something. Photos can be taken without landmarks in the photo to disclose the location.

Anyway ... Another Great Find!!

cool - will try to sort that for you - no - not detecting a resort. Just the right time and place and maybe the right detector for the conditions. I do try and avoid the surf beaches as I prefer early morning hunts, (calmer) - less wave action. Of night, with a torch. Fair amount of competition here..... and New Zealand is not a densely populated place. 4 MIL people in the entire country.....

Thanks dmnz - it would be great to see some photos of your beaches where you have found quality items.

Two more questions for you...

I've noticed that some of you finds are many decades old. Do you believe your finds at the beaches you detect are lost mostly by locals from NZ over the years or are the beaches popular by tourists also?

When you say "fair amount of competition here", are most of the competition in the water detecting or are they wet/dry sand hunters?

I detect between 4:30-8:00 AM and rarely see anyone detecting at that time. Although, I have detected a bit later in the morning during and after a summer holiday weekend at popular beaches. I have seen no fewer than 15 other detectors within a quarter mile. That's what I call detecting pressure :)
All other's that are detecting are on the wet and dry sand, no one in the water because it is always very rough water conditions. I know there is a gold mine out in waste deep water at low tide, I just need to find the right conditions to detect it.

Thanks for the information!
