1898 Dime from amongst the heavy trash!

Yesterday I hunted an area that has had activity since the late 1800's. Some friends had researched and received permission to hunt the site, which had a hotel and bath houses on it from the late 1800's through around 1920's. The structures are long gone and the grounds have been used as festival grounds for celebrating a local person who became a national celebrity, so you can imagine the trash! Luckily I had my 5x8 coil on the AT Pro.. So after finding a pouch load of clad and can slaw, not to mention those vexing aluminum twist caps that used to come on Coke and Dr. Pepper bottles, I decided to work a part of the grounds that was the place where people would have been coming into and out of 'back in the day'. The AT sounded like a machine gun, even when going fairly slow, but I caught just the whisper of a high tone between the trash sounds. At first I thought it was probably another aluminum twist cap but it was just 'different'. Here's where headphones come in handy! With the wind the way it was, there was no way I would have heard that signal! So after digging so many holes all day long, I was creaking a little bit as I knelt down to dig what I thought would likely end up as trash...then I noticed it was deeper than the junk had been coming from. I dug down to a layer of dirt that was different, and promptly lost the signal! As I went back through my diggings with the pro pointer, the target just kept sliding deeper into the loose dirt. Finally I caught a glimpse of silver. As it disappeared I thought, 'that looked like a coin!'. Keep in mind I was expecting another dang aluminum twist cap! Finally I got it in my grubby fingers and when I saw the date, almost had a 'Diggers' moment! I yelled to my buddy and took off running to show him what I found. I probably would have swung from a tree branch or done a cartwheel if I hadn't started the day with a sore back as it was.. So here it is, my best find! I'll be snagging a sniper coil asap and heading back first chance!

:clapping: awesome find!! Congrats!!

Love those old Barbers! Got to be a few more keepers scattered around there!

Very nice work. Love that ATP for sniffing goodies amongst the droppings !

Nice! I love when the nice signal dissapears. It's usually old and deep but the ProPointer can then sniff 'em out.

Since the first trip was more exploratory, the second trip will be more methodical. I'm going to grid some areas out and remove EVERYTHING...it's going to suck, lol! When I'm done though, I hope to have some really cool stuff! I didn't mention the pocketknife I found. It came from that same layer and was totally rusted shut and not much to look at really. I've been so involved with cache hunting and old legends for the last few years that I forgot how much fun it was to dig up silver coins-especially when they're that old!

Funny thing is, while we were detecting, we had folks pulling up to talk to us and ask us to come detect their place! Usually it's the nosy ones who think we're up to no good and breaking some law, but not this time! We even had a guy invite us to come on a 'paranormal' adventure with him to a couple haunted places. :yikes:

super great story and find!
