A friend of mine offered me an 1886 Morgan dollar, no mint mark but uncirculated, geez the thing is the size of a small hamburger lol. Couldn't imagine having them in the pockets. I figured he was too high on the price, he is asking 118.00 canadian. I looked for an "O" but there was no mint mark at all, it's in a boxboard plastic sleeve. Any thoughts???????
Its a common date, I would not pay anything near that price, way too high. The dies for the 1886 were over used so look for a sharp strike and avoid a grainy uneven luster. Remember - so many so called uncs are dipped Ex-Au coins - poor mans sliders. You really need to grade it yourself objectively. There should be some unbroken cartwheel luster (dipping usually alters that) and look for detracting marks in prominent areas. If there are any rim bumps, pass on it.
