1886 dated brass plate

I dug this brass plate yesterday at an old farm site and I'm looking for theories on it's use or origin.

It measures 6+ inches across and about 4 inches high. The same text appears on both sides like it was intended to be read from either direction.

Thanks in advance for any input you may have!

Today I found another plate at the same site. It's identical except that is has a different number on it that I assume is a date. Any ideas on idenfitication are appreciated.
