Well-known member
Did some cold weather detecting over the weekend at different parks. Ground is pretty stiff but I avoided the snow.
Indian head pennies are 1873, dateless, 1893,1895,1901,1905.
Barber dime is 1910 plain. Mercury dimes are back to 1918.
Nickels are 2 dateless buffalos, 1941,1958 Jefferson.
Ship wheel is an old pin. Silver ring is a coin ring.

Excellent finds - congrats !

Great finds once more!
You got to have a lot of virgin or semi-virgin parks in your area.

Far as oldies go at least around here, next best thing to digging up a Barber is an Indian. The old nickels are usually toasted.

Thanks Ironsight!
I was hundreds of miles from home this thanksgiving weekend. Got the Indian head pennies from 4 different parks.
Its snowing pretty hard here now.

Where ever you was at the soil was not very friendly to those IH's. They almost look like the ones I find in farm fields a round here.

I see you found another coin ring, sweeet. Do you know what type of coin it was made from?

Congrat's on all the great finds.

Howdy Mark,
Ya, the one Indian is really beat up. It is a very thin worn coin and im thinking that is the oldest one. The 1873 isn't too bad as I just washed it up and could clean it better. All were 8-10+ inch coins. I'm assuming the coin ring is a quarter. The inside is very wore and just has slight ticks from a coin design but I cant tell what it was.

Very interesting history on that old ship wheel.
Did it belong to the ship's captain? How did it get there? Was it given to a U.S. or Canadian soldier being transported during WWII? etc.

Reminds me of an old brass 1800's RR luggage tag i found a few years ago. Researched the old RR line and come to find out that long gone RR line had one of the worst passenger train wrecks in the country's history with hundreds of casualties and deaths. Was that tag recovered from the accident? If so, did the owner survive?Who did it belong to? etc.

Sometimes finding these type of things is better than digging up an old Barber...... too bad these objects can't talk.
