Token of some sort, not a coin.

Very cool find.

Can't tell you what it is, though. Even as a part-time coin dealer and somebody who's seen a lot of old tokens, I have to say, I have not seen that design before. The Indian looks a bit like the one on some of the small California fractional gold pieces, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

You Canadians had a ton of odd stuff circulating up there in the early- to mid-1800s. I'll bet it makes for some interesting digging. It certainly has, in this case.
 
hello don1, i'm thinking that since canada's official date of becoming a state was in 1867, could it be a commemorative medal signifying a peace treaty between an indian tribe and the canadian gov't? that was my first impression. just my two cents, and hh,
 
Ya we kinda thought it might commemorate the 1 year birthday of Canada
but if you look at the Indian you can see 9 stars ( so we think it is a USA thing)
