1867 Shield Nickel

JJ

Member
hey all, just ran out in my backyard today before it started to rain today and unearthed this 1867 Shield Nickel with my bounty hunter Sharpshooter II at about 5 inches. Sorry, my good digital camera is dead, my cell phone is the only camera i have right now, these are the best i could do.

Great find!! And you didn't have to burn any gas to get it. Congratulations.

Thanks Rich, found it with the 4" coil, i think i'll be out there with the 10"coil soon to see what else i can find. I have lived in this old house 2 years now, and between a ridiculously hectic work schedule and flat out procrastination, i had never swung a detector in this yard till today, i just got the urge. i spend so much time looking for great places to hunt that i forgot to start at square one.

Wow, JJ! That's a great find for a "backyard"! Sounds like your
ground may have an interesting history, right!?
Keep it going!

jj that is one fine specimine!!! an awesome find! i too have alot of ground to cover here where i live have found a good merc dime , son found a 1900 morgan dollar in near mint, cond. several wheats and several newer coins totaling 6 bucks and havent begun to cover all the ground, its and old country school that i live at and take care of. its been here since 1930s! happy hunting:clapping:

hahaha, jj, you'd be surprised sometimes what's in your own backyard! good job, where there's one there's usually more. hh,

Wow, what a great find and right outside your back door. Keep looking I'm sure there's more.
I found a Merc dime in my back yard! A year later I found an Indian head penny back there!
Keep us posted.

That's a neat piece of history, congrats!:beers:
I haven't received my coin values book yet, any idea what that would fetch on the market?

I dont know. It's not the more desirable 67 "with rays", both were produced that year, with and w/out, and the ones on ebay are all over the place in price, so i really dont know for sure. hoping more than .5 cents, lol. i dont think i would sell it anyway, it takes the title of my oldest dated find by almost 50 years. If you get some idea what you think it might be worth, feel free to let me know, thanks.

jj,

Your nickel should be worth at least $25, possibly even more. I don't blame you for wanting to keep it. Finding one that has been dug and having it in that condition, is not likely to happen often in a LIFETIME of metal detecting.Congratulations on the find!!

Scanners are the best way to put pics of coins on the net..they give the cleanest pictures...
Now if it would stop raining up here in SorryExcuse (Syracuse, NY), I might go out hunting...

Rich, thanks for that update and information. BH, the sun will be back out before you know it, I think these forums are a good way to "pacify the urge" during inclement weather and LONG winters.

It must be the familiar face. Here, let me take the glasses off.
