1853 seated liberty quarter

Hello to all! I recently took up the hobby about 2 months ago and am finally getting settled in with my f-75. On friday my buddy LUD(who has a safari) and I set out on an old farmhouse site with 8 acres that was built in 1885. His search yeilded 2 indian heads from 1874 and 1903 as well as a 1901 barber dime. He also picked up an 1866 2 cent peice on tuesday! I had become quite discouraged with all of his great finds over the last few days and i having little to show for my outings (must have been his lucky week). My f-75, (FINALLY), picked the prize of the week with an 1853 seated liberty in great condition at 4-5 inches depth at the base of an oak tree!
Also accompanying my first post are my first outing finds yeilding a 1909 lincoln, and a 1944 barber dime. (below pic-beginners luck) The knives came from my home place, and the 1896 indian head from a friends acreage! (southwest iowa has more to offer than i had anticipated!)

SWEET FINDS ! :clapping: WTG bud, keep it up, there are more like that waiting to be found.

WOW, that Seated is in great shape. Thanks for sharing the great find.

WOW is right. What a beautiful coin you have there. SW Iowa is where alot of those 1916d Mercurys are found.............

Question 1. Why do you think your buddy found all the coins initially and you didn't. ??

What depths did he find them ??

What did you do different when you started finding the coins ??

Do you feel it was Luck he went over the targets and you didn't..or do you think it was the difference in equipment ??

love that seated lady!..maybe her sister is there somewhere waitin' on ya!
great find,.. and the type of find that'll make ya a lifer!

F75 Tom strikes! :buds:

Question 1. Why do you think your buddy found all the coins initially and you didn't. ??
I've found numerous wheats, over the last few months, but rarely any silver. I think that since he's had his machine for about a year and i've had mine about 2 months, he's ahead of the game as far as knowing his machine better than i know mine. They're both really good machines in my opinion. His seems to identify coins much more precise. Secondly, I've adjusted my settings on the f-75. I used to detect with a disc of 55 and sens of 60. Since i've seen what coins read on my machine now, i have adjusted the disc down to 20 and the sens up to 65-85 depending on the area and how much trash/power lines exist.

What depths did he find them ??
both at about 5 inches

What did you do different when you started finding the coins ??
I think getting a better feel for the machine and just getting out and going more often is the biggest thing. I've only put about 30 hours before this expedition. The more you go out, the more you discover about your machine. I think the that a person has to get at least 100 hrs. on the machine before being comfortable with it.

Do you feel it was Luck he went over the targets and you didn't..or do you think it was the difference in equipment ??
Luck always has a play in finding things. I'm sure he would have found the seated if he had gone over it before i had. I also think that the indian heads could have been mine if I had gone over the area he was in. I think the machines are both very good. Last week was definitely his week! Regardless, its always fun when either one of us finds something pretty cool. I can't help but be a little jealous when he finds something like that 2 cent peice-in the same token though i'm pumped up for him! I'm sure it goes both ways!

And to all the posters, i never thought i'd be into md'n this much. But checking out all your cool finds and having all the info at my fingertips on this site is great. It's good to have the md'n fever!

f75tom,yes mding is fun and on this site is a lot of good folks that can tell interesting and funny stories......You never know what your walking over but a metal detector can bring it to light again.......hh.....Dan
PS nice finds

It just goes to prove that experience is sometimes the difference in what you find, and what you do not find.

I really appreciate the way you answered the questions, and gave your knowledge level with the machine, and, your settings first and then some changes.
You will be an awesome detectorists with a little more time.... OH !!! It is an addictive hobby LOL..... 30 years here and still loving it. Once in awhile I get a little off track..start switching machines and suffer the no experience effect..............and oh boy.that does make a difference in what you use and know..and what you find in the field. You can take some basics machine to machine, but you can't replace time and knowing the equipment your using................... Good luck fine Sir, please keep us posted as you find more great finds..

Nice find them seated quarters dont come easy. That quarter looks in great shape to.Keep up the good work.

Way to go. That 1853 gives all of us "flat land corn farmers" hope for the future. That thing is gorgeous. Trust me, there are guys (including me) who have been swinging a detector a lot longer that don't have one of those to show off. You should be hooked by now.

Remember this . You are hunting w/ 8 or 10" coil and tyring to cover a lot of land, 8-10 coil against 1000s of Sq. feet of land. It would take you a life time to cover every Sq. inch OF A PARK. I have a couple of small beaches and parks that I hunt on a regular Basie's and always find more new coins.( Right spot at right time I guess). Nothing ever gets HUNTED OUT. TO MUCH LAND TO COVER. 40 years experience

agree 150%..for the exact reasons stated!..35 years experience.

I hunt with a 11 DD coil- and i never said that our farmstead was hunted out. I'm well aware that you will more than likely find something new every time you go out. The littlest variances in the soil, the angle at which you swing your detector, or just plain luck can make the biggest differences between finding something or hearing nothing. I've gone over my home place at least 5 different times this spring and always come up with at least another wheat penny. I totally agree that a place is never "hunted out"
