1829 Half Dime

Okay, so this is the oldest U.S. coin I have found. I have only cleaned it with warm water and it retains most of it's mint luster. I took it to a local coin dealer to see what I should ask for it and he told me that this is a very desirable coin that I should be asking anywhere from $1,800 - $2,100 for a collector's price. I think 2,000 is reasonable, but I will go down a little.
Now he said the dealer price is lower, but that is another story. haha
The camera will not do the coin justice, but it is pretty close. Thanks.

Sorry about the orientation of this one.

I would grade it Very Fine. How about $100 ?

That is a nice find for sure but I think your local dealer is pulling your leg. :pinnochio maybe telling you what you want to hear.

My opinion is McDave has come pretty close on value and condition. Ebay has a professional graded 1829 Extra Fine which is a little better in detail than yours for $155, buy it now. It might be worth more to you in a display case than the cash.

Haha! :heh: Thanks.

That is funny, because he told me he thought it was worth that, but he would only buy it for $300. I asked him why was he cutting the price so much, and that is when he told me about the Dealer price.

The pictures don't catch the eye appeal. Maybe that is the difference, but I still am confused on why he told me such a high number.

Do you have access to a Red Book for USA coins ????

I do not. I have access to North American Coins & Prices 2013 edition.

The "Graysheet" AKA the Coin Dealer newsletter comes out weekly and is considered the Bible for dealers bid and ask prices.

As of Jan. 9, 2015 your coin is listed at $75 for Fine, $100 for VF, $160 XF, $220 AU, $325 UNC (MS60) $800 for MS63 up to $25,000 for a PR65!

IF your dealer will pay you $300 for this coin I would take the money and run unless you are in love with the coin and don't really want to sell.

In looking at your pictures there is no way this coin is AU (coin collecting for 60 years started at 7).

I'm thinking VF max, more likely Fine, hair on obverse is blended together.

$300 is a more then fair offer from a dealer, only other place were you might get more is from an individual party who falls in love with your coin and has money to burn.

Good luck and good hunting.

Denny

I'll give you $110 ?

Not interested in selling anymore. Dealer said he would give me $325.00 today. Thanks for looking.

That is a great price for you( $325) and from a dealer no less!

I'm thinking he has a buyer for the coin or he knows thru experience that, that date and condition does not show up in his neck of the woods to often.

Congratulations on a excellent find and a good sale price.

Good Hunting.

Thanks! :yo:

It makes me feel sort of good to get that price from him. I would have to agree with you those are very likely his reasons too.

I hope to find more of this sort of thing! :detecting:

Good luck to you.

Your photos must not do this coin justice. Congratulations ! :clapping:
