1828 era Jackson Political button

A cool rare button find today, this is my third political button and the second one where only the backmark has the writing/symbols, with the front of the button being plain!

Hint, always clean old flat buttons and check out the backmarks, it could be more than just a plain ole flat button! :)

Next week I will go back to that field and use the Excel this time. I need to use something ligthter for day than the machine I used today.

I have no idea on the worth of a button like this that has environmental damage, but if Alberts book in 1976 lists the button as RV125, than it must be big bucks in today's market, minus the corrosion damage....

Either way, I have another nice piece of history.

That's a great find Don! I should really clean up the backs of mine. I have hundreds that still have dirt on 'em :sadwalk: like the ones from this weekend even in my hand with the chicken head

I now take a good microwaveable container, fill it about an inch with Peroxide, put it in the Microwave for about 45-60 seconds, then drop the buttons in. Take about 10-20 minutes depending upon the dirt accumulation and then use the wet q-tips to clean away what is sticking to the button. You may have to repeat the peroxide, I did on these two buttons today, and one had a lot of gilt on it, but the peroxide did not hurt it.

I then coated the Jackson button with Blue Ribbon Coin Conditioner, just like I do to some of my colonial coins......

I found a button "way back when", and the front of it says "Old Hickory". It appears to be fairly old, and I often wondered if it was a reference to Jackson. I doubt it is, but you never know. I live right outside Hickory, NC, so that may have something to do with it too. I don't have a picture of it right now. But have you ever seen one with "Old Hickory" on it?

Tony, Alberts book which has Military and Political buttons in it does not list such a button, at least I could not find it, however, on a website there is this paragraph.

Known as "Old Hickory," because of his robustness, Jackson translated this appellation into physical paraphernalia. Hickory gave the Democrats something tangible from which they could create accouterments. Canes, hats, brooms and buttons all surfaced bearing Jackson

I had read something similar. I'll try to get a picture of it. Sounds like I have an ultra mega rare one of a kind button (unless someone in Texas found one in a confederate camp ) As far as the "Booze"....I think most of them are "cookin" their own! (No labels if you know what I mean ;)

on the Dumpo :banned: that this is your 3rd political "bootin"? Are their other political backmarks we should be looking for besides ones that say "Jackson"? :look: I figure they all pretty much say "GILT" & toss 'em in a shoe box

Let me see if I can get some pics of them on the forum.... If not I will post what they are.
But I think one is plain on the front, but the other has a design on the front but the politcal saying on the back..............
