1827 Dime

Had a great hunt today and found an 1827 Dime. In those days they would cut them in half for change as you know and has been done to this one. I found the coin at the site where there was an Indian trading post on 180 or so of land where there was a CW camp. We have recovered several hundred mini and round balls at the location. We are hunting an area where the the soil has just been turned over down to about 10". It was tough hunting but will be better after the soil is worked a little to smooth it down. The half of the dime I found is in very good condition. We have found about 15 pretty good coins in the 1850 to 1793 range. I hunt this site using IM-16, go by tones, and dig anything that sounds good or iffy.

The digital reading for the 1827 dime was 7/25. I called my son over and told him to dig it up as it was a good hit and was a mini ball. I found a lot of balls in those fields and they read in that digital range and the tone sounded just like a mini ball. He dug the coin and thought it was a cut spanish coin as we have dub them before at that site.
My assumption is that the coin cut in half was the reason for the readings as there was no iron in the hole or next to the coin to skew the readings. A dime reads 1 to 0 / 28 to 31 most of the time on my machine if there is no iron or heavy minerals to skew the readings. My son found a quarter real about a 1/4 mile from the area we were hunting last summer but did not take a digital reading to see what it was. It sure made me think a lot about passing up good sounding hits or good readings in the mid tone ranges. This is one of those sites were I use all metal, IM-16 make sure I hear everything in the ground.
About 2000 soldiers camped there during the civil war, tent city, around an Indian trading post. We have heavy equipment to work the ground and hay is grown as a cash crop so we can turn different areas to give us an area to hunt. There are over 180 acres so this is an area we will never hunt out no matter how long it is hunted. The place is on private property and has been in the family for over a hundred years so makes it a great place to hunt.
