1800,s gold rings

mike k.

I was talking with a guy that buys scrap gold , and he told me some 1800,s gold rings were plated with a higher kt. gold . Anyone else ever hear this ? I have found a handfull of 1800,s gold wedding bands , in the past , that I thought were only plated . Now I will recheck these . -mike

Mike...there are "gold filled" and "gold plate" items. Gold filled stuff is around twice as valuable, as the layer is much thicker than gold plate. As far as the actual karat of the gold used in either process...I don't know. Gold filled items will generally have "G.F." stamped somewhere on it.
Good luck!
