18" Excellerator II coil on a V3i?

Has anyone ever tried this combination? I know they dont make this coil anymore, but there are a few out there floating around and I was wondering if anyone in here has tried it. Looks like it would be great for the open fields and relic hunting. Thanks

Can't help with this one, but wonder how well such a large would work with coin sized targets. It would be too big for me. Not being V rated it would lose more. I'd pass for my type of hunting.

It would be worth the try, that is what it was designed for. Start building up your arm, it has got to be heavy.

pass it up.

It isn't 'rated' or really designed for the Spectra V3i.

They are a little heavy, but the size out on the far end of the rod make the overall balance and 'feel' terrible.

They are designed for coverage and large target searches in more open areas. If you're out on the search for cannon balls, caches of silver coins in glass jars, pottery crocks stuffed with silver and gold jewelry and other home objects, or maybe other big-sized targets from a military or pioneer situations, then they might work.

For coins, buttons, bullets and other smaller-sized targets they are a waste of money. I tried a few several years ago on a couple of different brands upper-end models with the expected miserable results. A good bigger coil for smaller targets would be in the 10" to 12" range, but not larger than that.

I am using the SEF coil from Kellyco right now it's the 10x12. I really like it and it is working very well for me. Thanks for the heads up.

As Monte stated for coin size targets, 12" is a good upper limit. The 10x12 seems to be the most popular SEF.

I have a friend with a 15x12 SEF and it is a MONSTER. He said he needs to switch arms every so often because it is too heavy. I like the 10x12 and it is my default coil for the V3i. My accessories are the 5.3, the 950 and the D2.

For me the D2 isnt as deep as the 10x12....and it pinpoints kinda funky....plus it seems noisy to me....but that may be due to my lack of experience with this machine.

John, sometime when you have time, set up up your detector and get a signal% and noise% reading with the D2.
Now leave the set up the same but do it in the same place with the 10x12.

Post the results.

What will this tell you Rob? Just curious, seeing as I am new at this game.

I was just curious. Since the 10x12 is not v rated I was wondering how much noisier it was compared to the D2 at the same setting on the same ground.

I think the SEF is quieter at higher gains. The only problem I have is if TX boost is on it will overload at high gains. Other than that it is a smooth as a baby's bottom!

I don't know about depth but at he same settings and in 3 frequency mode the 10x12 SEF shows twice the signal % reading as the 10D2 in frequency zoom. This is because the 10x12 is not V rated to handle the 22.5 frequency. In single frequency 2.5 and 7.5 frequency the signal % readings show no real difference. So for 3 frequency I'll keep the D2.
