18 " excelerator vs 17" x 21" SEF

If you are seeking maximum depth on coin or ring sized targets then neither is your best choice. They'll for sure give you tons of coverage and would work well for cache or larger target hunting but coins/rings at depth won't be good for it. Sure, you'll hit shallow coins/rings but if you want max depth on those types of targets then most say the 15x12 SEF is where it's at. A few say the WOT coil is still king of depth. In heavier minerals neither one of these coils might not go as deep as say the 12x10, S-12, Excelerator 12.5", or the 10" stock coil. I guess which is deepest would depend on the amount of minerals where you hunt. Very severe minerals might make it the 10" or 12x10, or you might even have to drop down to an 8" coil to get the best depth. I think (still all a theory I'm working on with testing) that real heavy minerals will dictate which coil size is the deepest and not the other way around. If lower minerals I have no doubt the bigger coils will go deeper. I think the problem is that the machine can only process so much in the way of ground matrix. Once it's saturation point is reached target depth and identity suffers. Adjusting sensitivity much lower than what is stable might overcome this problem, as the coil is running less "hot" and so is seeing less ground, but whether that means it's getting deeper than a smaller coil by adjusting that is a balancing act. IE: An 8" coil running at 11PM might get deeper than a larger coil running at the same setting due to the target washing out with the ground signal. On the other hand, the larger coil running at 2PM with less sensitivity might get deeper than the 8" at 11PM. It's a balancing act that I am testing out with my coils as I get the chance. Many variables to consider and sort through.

Thanks criiterhunter,

I want the coil for cache and tresure hunting , for coin hunting i have the WOT and other coils. I have the 18x15 sef and the amp , but i need more power .

Sales Pitch? Maybe!

I just picked up one for my Sovereign. I wanted to cover some serious ground on the beach when one of those nor easters blow in.

As far as i can remember shauns amp doesn't work to best effect with the bigger coils, especially the SEF and gives better results on the 10", http://www.findmall.com/read.php?21,1021322,page=3

I'm not getting much depth increase on the etrac using the 15x18 compared to the 12x15, could be the minerals and extra emi that the bigger coil picks up that causes me to have to lower the sens a little, hence nulling any increase, this could be different where you are.

I made up this rig for LONG walks on the beach. MineLab SD2200d with 18" Mono
I don't have a coil this size for my SOV. so don't know if it's PP will work all that great
with the 18", if you have trouble trying to PP turn it up on edge and try it that way.
That's the method most have to use with the large Mono coils when hunting nuggets
and that I have to use on the beach. Be sure to keep it ground balanced ( if you run
in tracking you can balance out small deep targets so run in fixed as much as you can ).
Leave your scoop at home , you 'll need a shovel!!!!

the shauns amp with the the pp mode on a larger coil 18 x 15 it works very well , a fresh iron laminate of 50cm x 50cm buried at 1.2 meter or 4 foot the coil gives a good responce in pp mode . In air test my ford F100 is detected at 2.5 meters with the 18x15 sef with pp mode .

Maybe a 21x17 sef coil increase 1 or 2 foot , i dont know, 356 dlls is a great inversion for a coil
