using the 5"by10"hfdd in heavy trash . is this going to allow me to "cherry pick"targets better than the standard mf 9"concentric when chasing coins in parks and on beachs?i have tried the 6"hfdd,you all may like it ,it didn't rattle my chains.having said this ,since aquiring this new coil i have used it three times with poor results and in fact have gone back to the concentric for better returns.maybe i'm being to hard on it,not holding my mouth the right way,i don't know .maybe i'm another white settler in the black hills. hh blowfly:detecting:

The DD should give you better target separation, but don't get it wet. For cherry picking as you're main goal with it, I wouldn't buy it for that reason alone.
What didn't you like about the 6in coil? I've got the medium frequency one and they do feel like you are using a tooth brush, but in trashy ground, they are the best way to go. After all, that is what they're designed for.

I think the biggest reason alot of people don't like the small coils is because they can't cover alot of ground. I once wanted to get done with a place as fast as I could. I have learned to slow down because I was missing alot of great items.
I don't have the X70 or any small coils right now but I have learned that slowing down will make more finds.

mick and campcache you are probably both right i hated the little area it covered, seemed to take forever to move ahead.that's why i went for the bigger coil. hh blowfl;y:goodnight:

The DD coils are best for sifting through high trash areas. The stock coil that comes with the X-Terra detectors is a Concentric and this has a "cone-shaped" detection field (with the tip of the cone pointing down). The field gets wider as it gets closer to the concentric coil. The DD coils produce a "blade-shaped" emission field and therefore are better suited to areas with multiple targets or high trash areas. The overlapping swings from a DD coil are somewhat more thorough than the swings of a Concentric coil (which need to be tighter in order not to miss anything at depth).

The Elliptical 5x10" DD HF coil is the most commonly used as it is best suited to covering large areas quickly. (It's also water-resistant only) This is usually the first DD coil users will obtain and is incredibly lightweight. Designed especially for Gold Prospecting. It's sensitive to medium to large sized targets.
The smaller 6" DD HF coil is deeper penetrating and has an even narrower detection field blade, but it must be used very slowly and is best suited to smaller areas and especially creeks and rock pools (it's waterproof). It's super sensitive to incredibly small targets at depth. Can detect larger targets easily.
The larger 10.5" DD HF coil is the largest and heaviest DD coil. It's best for farmlands and open fields and penetrates slightly deeper than the Elliptical but is offset by considerably more weight. Many users will pick the Elliptical over this one due to the weight alone. But in the rural areas, this is a great coil with good results. No idea how well it performs on the beaches. Not quite as sensitive to smaller targets such as the 6" coil is... but then again, that coil is specialized.

Yes, the DD coils are best suited for sifting through multiple targets, but you'll need to pick the right coil for your needs.
No single coil does everything you want it to do (unfortunately).

Cheers,

Marco

According to the Minelab factory site, there is a 6" concentric coil for the X70 as well. Does anyone have any experience with it? I haven't seen any comments on that particular coil.

What about the 3khz coil? I haven't seen too much about it either. Anyone?

okay nero,i'll give it another bash! i really want to find more with it . it's to expensive to throw in the corner $195.00 aud.this ain't the states! hh blowfly
