1796-1801 Large copper today

Well I have been hunting an old farmstead that was built in 1790. The owner has lived here for over 50 years and at the ripe old age of 90 wonders what the hell the interest is in walking back an forth over his fields with some electronic device. I asked for permission a couple of weeks back and have put in 4 days of hunting, about 20 hours total. The several fields he owns have been and are being hayed at this time. He also has about 100 yards of old grape vines that he is sure were planted and harvested since 1880! I haven't hit that area yet.

Today I hit one of my goals. I found my first large copper and am stoked. I decided to give the fields a rest and go onto what I think is a cartpath or old road that leads into the several fields and woods. The grass is really short, hard packed dirt and trees that are pretty old. The roadway is between two stone walls that are about 20' apart. I decided to hit this area because it had that calling to me look to it. Have you ever had that. You are hunting an area, trying to be systematic and something catches your eye and says for you to go to that area. Whether its a knoll in a field, or a clearing in some trees, this one was the two stone walls and the short natural grass. Any way I am glad I switched gears and started to search here. About 15 minutes into it I got a 12-39 signal at 4". I thought for sure I had a Lincoln. Dug out the plug, took a scoop of dirt and probed the hole, still in there. Another hand full of dirt and its in the pile. I reach in with my fingers and out pops the greenest disc I have ever found. So crusted that I couldn't see any design.

I don't have to tell you how fast my heart was pumping. I have been so wanting to find a LC this year and in this area. I hunted for another hour and went home to clean up the prize and look it up. After gently brushing off the dirt, washing it slightly, soaking in olive oil I found what I recognized as "5 Centime" on the back. Looked it up and it is a French 5 Centime minted from 1796-1801. Not in the best shape, but in person the coin is definately recognizable.

Some of the other finds from the farm are several colonial buckles, colonial buttons, an 1894 "o" Barber dime, 1908 IH, some wheats, and some other whatsits. I plan on going back there soon. Now, after finding that LC I don't know if the Lincolns will ever be as exciting. HH
