1786 vermont need help

bula

Member
I went out for a few hours & came up with this coin, it is a 1786 vermont which I have never seen one of these so I need your advise. I do know that they make copy's of these coins but the ones I have seen have copy stamped in them. I have no idea weather this is real or fake, take a look & let me know your opinion.

Congratulations bula!

It looks like the real deal to me but I am far from being an expert. Hope someone having experience with colonial coins chimes in soon for you.

I have done a little research on it & found that they were suppose to weigh at least 1/3rd of a troy ounce or a minimum of 160 grains. Mine weighs approx 180 grains & is 28.575 mm across. Those I have found on line do not weigh as much as this one, most are around 120 grains.

Again, I am no expert. However, it looks like your coin meets/exceeds the minimum weight and the 120 grain coins do not. Seems the 120 grain coins have either lost a lot of weight to wear / corrosion or they could be fakes. Yours still has a strong possibility of being the real thing.

Good luck

Looks real to me, if it is, depending on the grade could be worth up to a couple of thousand. Great Find!!

It looks more & more like it is going to turn out to be a fake, but a very good one at that.

Either way that is a real nice find Bula. Sounds like you need to take a trip to the local coin dealer............

Well heck Bula, even if it is a fake they cost about $15 from what I have seen online. Not a bad find at all. I do hope it turns out to be the real deal for you though! Good thoughts!!

It's a cool find no matter what. I would love finding one of those in my stocking. :)

I have found a few others but they were clearly marked copy, this one had me on cloud 9 for a bit but I guess it is still worth a little even as a counterfeit.

Does it have an edge seem? I haven't heard of a contemporary counterfeit but, if it doesn't have an edge seem..... I'll check some books. Sweet find!

nw1836 no it does not have a edge seam but I scratched the edge just enough to see if it was copper under the crust, looks more like lead. That combined with the vdi reading I get from it, it is a counterfeit. A very good one but still counterfeit.
