1770-90's 3.5 inch Artois Buckle

Hi all,

It's been a while since I've been online. I've been out about three times in the past two months. The last two hunts were at a 1750's house. It was built for a doctor. We got permission to hunt the property. Very large field system freshly mowed made hunting a lot of fun. These finds are from the past to hunts combined.

The best find was a beautiful artois style Georgian shoe buckle from the 1750's-1770's. I think this one was from the doctors boot.

Also was found was a sweet little crotal bell. This one is very small and very crude. Note the small nub on it were perhaps it was broken from the mold. The iron ball is still in it.

The usual assortment of colonial flat buttons consisted of one tombac and other flats.

On the first hunt I unearthed a beautiful 2 cent piece 1864. It is in really nice condition with just about no wear at all. There is a bit of vertigree on it but not bad. On the second hunt, (yesterday) out popped another 2 cent piece not 50 feet from the first one. This one is also 1864 and in a very corroded state. How awesome to find two 2 cent pieces at the same site. These coins were only minted for 9 years between 1864 and 1873 (two additional years never circulated) I am quite pleased to have two of them in my collection.

One very nice 1924 Merc dime was also uncovered about 5" deep. It is neat to find coins that span 150 years at the same site.

The photo of the 2 cent piece is the one I found on the first trip out to the site.

Thanks for reading my long post. I just had to write and get caught up for the past few hunts.

Nice finds Ed. I do my fair share of hunting in western Mass, and I'm always glad when nice relics pop up, like yours. Congrats!!! Early buckles make for great displays, so do the large buttons. I love my colonial coins, but have a sweet spot in my heart for 2 cent, 3 cent, Indians, etc.... They were the coins I always drooled over when I was a kid. Have a ball on that site, as long as you have permission. It's not often that you get those kind of days out. HH

Hi coinnut and thanks for the reply. This site has been great. We plan on going again this fall after they cut the rest of the North field which abuts the piece where I found both 2 cent pieces and the buckle. My friend also pulled a beautiful buckle from there on the first hunt. It was close to the house. His buckle was a bit smaller than mine and had a complete two spiked chape with a complete two spiked tongue. I found a two spike chape out near where I found the 2 cent pieces so maybe there is a third buckle out there waiting for us :bouncy: Good luck at your sites in Western Mass. There is some beautiful old country out there.

Thanks and good luck to you guys. I'm sure there will be more coins there too. I have found that my same old stomping grounds ,have produced over and over again, just by changing my programs around. I look forward to seeing what you guys get.HH
