$175 to upgrade my cz6

sb

New member
I called fisher about a month ago, my cz6 the plug in on the box where the coil wire connects is broken. They wanted $175 to do the upgrade to a cz6a, the unit has worked great ever since I owned it, the plastic just got brittle. I think $175 is a little much to unsolder some wires, and solder a new connector on both the earphone connector and the coil wire and connector on the box. From what I understand thats the upgrade, If thats the case I can do it myself, just need to find the connectors to do it with. Am I correct on what the upgrade is?

make a CZ-6 go to a CZ-6a. He got some parts, but ended up doing it wrong & totally frying the entire unit so the only thing good left was just the rods. The control box & coil with a cut wire went into the trash can.....
You can't get a used CZ-6a or a CZ-5 on E-Bay or classifieds for $175., they are $400, so it may not be as bad as it sounds. When they did my CZ-6 conversion, what I got back was like a brand new unit, totally.......

First and foremost I have no technical knowledge but do know since the CZ6 came on the scene in late 91 or early 92 cost of living has increased dramatically and was expensive when I had my CZ6 converted to a CZ6A in 93 or so..Would seem like a simple procedure but its not. I think Mr. Bill gave an excellent post and heck he has the technical knowledge..My suggestion a used CZ6A or CZ5 would cost you $350 to $400 depending on condition etc and lets face it the CZ6 you have has stood the test of time so the $175.00 might be better spent as stated above. You could always use the rod section to mount an acc. coil for quicks changes and perhaps use the control box for misc. parts..I feel Fisher made a unit that stood the test of time and gave you good service for a dozen years or so...just may be time to move on...I feel most of the readers would agree they wish their detectors hold up as well as yours...Personally being a CZ user since 92 and having used every model since would not invest to have it converted but thats your call..

I think the price to upgrade is a lot,but worth it.If you've been happy with the detector, why not just have the problem fixed. How mush would that costs?

Most detector companies are very reasonable to cheap on repair of their units. Whites and Garretts have been very good to me. I think I will have to wait awhile and hear better results on Fisher repairs before I invest in another Fisher.
