1700's Coin????!!!!

I found this at a house that was built in 1850. It was only about 4 inches down but thought it was some sort of token. After cleaning off the dirt it seems more like a coin. On one side theres a 10 with a wreath around it and on the other side there is some sort of shield with branches on the sides of the shield. Also the letters VINCES is shown. Can someone help me with identifying it? Thanks, Taylor

Taylor, the wording may be the Latin phrase In hoc signo vinces, " with this symbol we will win" or something like that. If that seems to be the phrase on your coin go to the above link and read the history of the phrase. Was a favorite of the Portuguese Monarchy. Looked at what Portuguese coins I could find and none exactly like yours but very similar. A lot of other organizations used it thru history but I think your best bet is an old Portuguese coin.

Found these pics of Portugese coins - may be an older version of one of these.

well, it sure looks to be that period. either late 1700s or early 1800s. maybe even mid 1700s, but that might be pushin it. was there something there before the house that was built in 1850? cause i can tell you that coin is older than 1850s. i'd be surprised if its that young.
