17 x 13 elliptical coil

starky

New member
Was wondering if any one uses or has used this coil, and if so, what your input is on it.
Is the depth allot more, and the where to and where not's you would recommend using it at.
any input would be great before I put that much money out on one.
Thanks

I have one. It gives about 1in more depth and stable TIDs. It also gives better coverage. The problems I have with it is that it spoils the balance of the detector and gives wacky depth measurements. It is also very sensitive to EMI and nearby trash..
I only use it for beaches or large relatively trash free areas. IMO, its kind of a specialty tool. Very useful if you hunt a lot in these types of situations. But its not fun to use in a trashy park...

Having had all of the giant coils for minelab, I think th17x13 is the most stable large coil I have used. I hunt a lot in old country homesteads. I use the 17 whenever there is an area not covered with trash under the footprint. I have not had the EMI trouble cited, or at least not that I have noticed. It is a monster tool, and imho, ALL coils are specialty coils...i.e. to be used under the appropriate circumstances. I also have the 6 inch coil, which I love as well.
For me, ANYTIME I CAN get away with the bigger coil, I will use it. Even with the additional weight, i can swing it a LOT longer than I could with the old E-Trac/EXII. and EXplorer XS. I haven;t even needed to use my swingy thingy.

IF it were to be a choice between the 6 inch and the 17, I would probably get the 6 inch first. For scraped lots and such......then the 17 for more depth/coverage.

thanks for your input, My 6" coil is scheduled to be delivered to my home on Monday.
I am researching and getting all the feedback I can from all of you before I order the big coil.
I am certain I will eventually purchase one, just want to make sure I am not wasting my money if the stock coil does just as well.
Thanks again!

Gitterdug, what the heck kinda cat is that? It looks like a Lynx or a bobcat...something that should NOT be hanging out in your kitchen!!!

They make great pets. You just gotta feed them whenever they even look like they might be hungry!! lol

Hope that buggar isn't temperamental!----Great looking cat!

I hunt with the stock coil the most. 6" coil for trash and the 17 for cleaner open areas. It still has surprising target separation and no emi issues for me.
