17 inch coil

New member
I would like to get feedback on users' experiences with the big coil, particularly in less trashy areas such as fields and old homestead yards.

Are folks:
backing off Autosensitivity,
backing off gain,
adding more or less discrimination,
Deep and fast on/off settings,
etc

Are folks needing to change the set up in dry vs wet conditions?

Thanks!

I do have one have mounted it and checked the balance and done a few air test. The fields I would hunt with a coil that big are grown up or have crops planted in them right now. The sensitivity and gain would depend on your conditions where you hunt. The discrimination and other settings should be about the same. It is a bit heavy but balances better than I thought it would with the shaft just a little shorter than I run the stock coil. I hope to get it to the beach next month and give it a test run there.

Anyone else hunted with the 17" Coil?

I should have mine in the next day or so, I will be sure to keep you posted.

I just got back in from my 1st hunt with the 17".
First, changing the coil is a pain--I do miss the SunRay X-1 quick connect.
The coil is big and seems to hit hard and has probably 3 or so more inches in depth than the stock.
Air testing ialso hits better and deeper than stock coil.
Because of the size, it is much easier to get overlap coverage of sweeps, so it is less likely to miss a spot, and more time efficient..
There is lots more nulling, as one would expect from a big coil. So this is a coil for open spaces: fields, yards that have already been cleaned out...
Pinpointing is incredibly accurate for a big coil.
It is big, a bit heavier, but not bad.

Results in a 30' x 30' area I had hit hard with 11" CTX stock coil:
1919 Merc at 5 inches--probably missed it due to coverage
a crusty Hibernia farthing at 11.5 inches--the full depth of the Lesche digger. It hit fairly well.
Unfortunately, the farthing is basically nearly completely corroded except for "gius" on the front (Georgius), George !'s portrait, and "HIB" on the back (Hibernia)
Sorry I don't have a camera set up, but the Hibernia would be unrecognizable.

I received mine today I plan on taking it out tomorrow. I will be sure to keep you posted.

Mike,
Where didl you get the Control Box cover?

I've got to say that changing coils is a pain. Am I the only one?
I would like the ability to quickly swap between the 11" and 17" as needed at a site.

If you have an extra lower rod then it is quicker than on the E-Trac as there is just less to do (2 rods compared to 3 on the E-Trac). All things still being equal (no lower rod on either), it is still quicker than on the E-Trac.

An extra lower rod is the key.

I had ask a dealer about a extra lower rod was told somewhere between $150 and $160 ouch that is the price of a coil for a lot of detectors. For now guess I will be changing it the hard way.
